Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Return

The heavy oak front door banged against the interior drywall with a deafening thud, sending a fresh wave of panic straight to my chest.
Before I could lower the phone from my ear—while the principal’s line was still ringing on the other end—a tall, imposing figure strode uninvited into our entryway. It wasn't the police, and it wasn't Agent Miller.
It was my late husband’s brother, Uncle Richard.
Richard hadn’t stepped foot inside our house in over two years. He was a corporate litigator with sharp, wire-rimmed glasses, an expensive charcoal suit, and a habit of showing up unannounced whenever our family was at its most vulnerable. He stood in the foyer, catching his breath, his dark eyes sweeping over the scattered laundry on the floor and resting briefly on Chloe, who was cowering under her quilt.
“Put the phone down, Sarah,” Richard said, his voice flat, demanding, and utterly devoid of warmth. “Principal Vance isn't going to help you clean up this mess. I just ran into Officer Miller outside your gate, and she gave me a full rundown of what’s happening here.”
My hand trembled as I canceled the call to the school. “What are you doing here, Richard? How did you even know—?”
“Miller is an old college fraternity brother of mine,” Richard interrupted, walking uninvited into the living room and dropping a heavy leather briefcase onto the coffee table. “He called me as a professional courtesy because he knew Child Protective Services is one signature away from opening a formal dependency case against this household. And if they do, it doesn’t just destroy Julian’s future—it brings a public court order down on our family name.”

From down the hall, Julian’s bedroom door clicked open. My son stepped out, his eyes widening in sudden, desperate hope as he recognized his uncle standing in the living room.
“Uncle Richard!” Julian blurted out, rushing down the hall. “Tell Mom she’s losing her mind! The cops were here over a stupid argument, and now she’s threatening to kick me out or send me away!”
