Chapter 4 - The Siege at the Hospital

The digital clock on the wall of the consultation room read 2:14 AM. For over an hour, I had sat across from Officer Davis and Officer Reyes, walking them through every single second of the nightmare in my mother's kitchen. I described Vanessa's sudden, explosive rage over a single bite of chocolate cake, the terrifying sound of Chloe's face hitting the wood, my mother physically pinning my arms to protect Vanessa, and the chilling hiss of, “You'll make Vanessa worse.”
Officer Davis closed his notebook with a soft thud, his pen clicking shut.
"The timeline and the physical evidence match the medical report perfectly," Officer Davis said, looking at me with grim certainty. "The bruising on the right side of Chloe's face is consistent with a linear wooden edge impact, not a fall. We've already dispatched a patrol unit to your mother's residence on Maple Street to bring Vanessa in for questioning regarding second-degree child abuse and aggravated assault."
"They won't open the door easily," I warned him. "My mother protects Vanessa like a cult leader protects a deity. They'll claim I'm having a psychotic break."
"They can try," Officer Reyes said, adjusting his utility belt. "Once a judge signs off on a protective custody and arrest warrant based on this medical file, doors come off hinges."
A sharp knock sounded on the glass door of the consultation room. A nurse from the ICU poked her head in, her face pale and breathless.
"Mrs. Miller? You need to come upstairs right now," the nurse said, her voice shaking slightly. "Your mother and another woman just bypassed the front desk security by claiming to be immediate legal guardians, and they're currently screaming in the PICU hallway, trying to force their way into your daughter's room."
My blood ran cold.
I stood up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the linoleum floor. "They're here?"
"They're creating a massive disturbance," the nurse said. "Security is trying to hold them back, but your mother is shouting that you kidnapped her granddaughter and that Vanessa is the real victim of a malicious conspiracy."
Officer Davis stood up immediately, resting his hand near his holster. "Stay behind us, Mrs. Miller. Let us handle this."
We rushed out of the room, taking the stairwell two steps at a time to reach the third-floor Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Even before the heavy fire doors pushed open, the shrill, hysterical sound of my mother's voice echoed down the sterile hallway.
"Let me through! That unnatural bitch of a daughter is holding my family hostage!" my mother screamed, her voice cracking with fury as two hospital security guards blocked the entrance to the ICU wing.
And standing right behind her, wringing her hands with a look of theatrical, performative terror on her face, was Vanessa.
When Vanessa spotted me walking down the hall flanked by two police officers, her eyes widened, and she pointed a trembling finger straight at my chest.
"There she is!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice bouncing off the white walls. "She did it! She’s the one who hurt Chloe and she's trying to blame it on me because she's always been jealous of our family!"

Silence fell over the entire ICU hallway, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beep of medical monitors leaking out from behind closed doors.
