Chapter 10 - The Warrant for Arrest

"Clara? Clara, wait—" Mark’s voice panicked through the receiver, but I didn't give him the satisfaction of another word.
I slammed the phone down onto the cradle, cutting off his frantic shouting.
Sergeant Vance let out a sharp breath, slamming her hand down on the laptop keyboard to save the audio file. "Got it! Every single word. That's a direct acknowledgment of the box, the ledger, and the conspiracy." She looked up at Ramos with a triumphant grin. "Take that recording straight to Judge Miller's chambers. Add it to the emergency motion to deny bail."
Detective Ramos grabbed the flash drive containing the audio file and sprinted out of the room without a second to waste.
I sank back into the metal chair, my legs suddenly feeling like lead as the adrenaline drain hit me all at once. My hands were still shaking, but for the first time since the night began, the tremors weren't from fear. They were from survival.
"You played him brilliantly," Vance said softly, pulling up a chair beside me and placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Mark's lawyers won't be able to spin that recording. Between the ledger, the encrypted texts, and his own confession on tape, his bond hearing at 1:00 PM is going to be a complete dead end. He's staying locked up."
"And Uncle Lawrence?" I asked, looking up at her. "What about the clinic?"
"Ramos has already dispatched a tactical unit to execute the search warrant on Lawrence’s facility downtown," Vance assured me. "By the time Mark steps in front of the judge, his entire network will be dismantled."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The nightmare wasn't completely over—there were still court dates, custody battles, and a long road of healing ahead of me and my son. But the invisible chains that had bound me to that house, to that family, and to that fear had finally been shattered.
"I need to go back to the hospital," I said quietly, standing up from the table. "Brandon will be waking up soon. And this time, when I feed him, I'm going to look out the window knowing nobody is coming for him."
Vance smiled warmly, walking me out toward the precinct exit where a secure police escort was waiting to drive me back.
As we stepped out into the bright, crisp Chicago afternoon sunlight, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text message from an unknown number.
May you like
We know where you are, Clara. This isn't over.
My thumb hovered over the screen, but instead of feeling fear, a cold, sharp resolve settled deep in my bones. I didn't delete the message. I forwarded it directly to Sergeant Vance, looked up at the towering skyline of the city, and took my first real step forward.
