Chapter 9 - The Stranger at the North Gate

Nathaniel set his mug down on the windowsill with a sharp click, his expression shifting back into instant, lethal alertness. He crossed the room in three long strides, pressing the intercom button on the wall panel.

“What is it, Marcus?” Nathaniel demanded, his voice dropping into its cold executive register.

“We caught movement on the thermal sensors near the old service trail behind the north garden,” Marcus reported, his tone clipped and urgent. “Someone tried to disable the perimeter motion sensors. Our patrol guard intercepted them before they crossed the stone wall, but... sir, it’s not a reporter, and it’s not one of Arthur Lowell’s lawyers.”

Nathaniel frowned, glancing back at me before replying into the mic. “Who is it?”

“It’s Clara,” Marcus said, the hesitation in his voice heavy. “Vanessa’s former personal assistant. The one who disappeared on Saturday night right after the scandal broke. She’s claiming she has physical evidence regarding the offshore accounts that wasn’t in the forensic files... and she insists on speaking directly to Elena.”

I froze, the cup of tea in my hand trembling slightly. Clara. The woman who had helped manage Vanessa’s daily schedule, who had overseen the guest lists, and who had silently watched everything unfold from the shadows of the household staff.

“Clara wants to talk to me?” I asked, stepping closer to the intercom.

“Yes, ma’am,” Marcus confirmed. “She says she has something belonging to the master files that Vanessa tried to burn before she left the property. She says her life is in danger and she wants protection in exchange for the complete ledger.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. He turned away from the panel, grabbing his suit jacket from the back of the chair. “Lock down the perimeter. Bring Clara into the secure holding room in the basement, not the main study. And have the security detail sweep the north trail twice just to make sure she wasn't followed.”

“I’m coming with you,” I said firmly, setting my mug down beside his.

Nathaniel started to protest, opening his mouth to issue a standard executive refusal, but he stopped when he saw the absolute determination in my eyes. He knew as well as I did that Clara wouldn't trust a security chief or a corporate lawyer. She wanted to talk to the person who had survived the house she had served in.

“All right,” Nathaniel nodded, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back as we stepped out into the hallway. “Stay behind me.”
