Chapter 2 - The Probate Trap

“What did you say?” Detective Vance stopped cold, her hand halting halfway through cuffing Edward’s second wrist. She turned her sharp gaze back toward him. “What paperwork?”

“Ask her,” Edward chuckled darkly, nodding his head toward Patricia. “The devoted wife. She signed every single document. By the time these brats turn eighteen next month, there won't be a penny left in Daniel Sterling’s precious trust. It’s all been liquidated into commercial real estate development assets under my management corporation.”

Patricia buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, hysterical sob. “He said he would leave me if I didn't! He said we had crippling debts, that the house was going to foreclosure!”

“You traded our future for a man who beat us in the dark,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. The cold, calculated survival mechanism that had kept me alive for four years suddenly threatened to shatter, replaced by an overwhelming wave of nausea.

“Mr. Vance, anything you say from this point forward will be used against you in a court of law,” Detective Vance said sharply, signaling the officers to haul him out through the heavy steel door. As Edward was dragged past, he shot me one last look—a promise of retribution that chilled me to the bone.

Once the door slammed shut, Detective Vance turned her attention back to us, her professional demeanor masking a deep, simmering anger. “Phoebe, Clara—what did Clara mean just before Edward was arrested? What legal documents did you find?”

Clara pulled herself up slightly, wincing as she ignored the stabbing pain in her side. She reached into the pocket of her hospital gown and pulled out a crumpled, damp manila envelope. It had been taped securely to the inside of her thigh beneath her jeans before we were brought into the ER.

“When Edward was downstairs in his study last week arguing on the phone with his accountant, I managed to slip into his home office file cabinet,” Clara explained, her voice gaining strength with every word. “I found the original trust ledger Dad left behind, alongside copies of the forged signatures Edward and Mom used to drain the primary accounts.”

Detective Vance took the envelope carefully, sliding out the documents. As her eyes scanned the pages, the color drained from her face.

“This isn't just financial fraud,” Vance muttered, her voice dropping to a whisper. “This is systematic embezzlement of a protected minor trust. And if Edward used forged power-of-attorney documents while your father was still alive... that crosses into federal wire fraud.”

“That’s not even the most important part,” I added, my hands gripping the thin hospital blanket until my knuckles turned white. “Dad knew this would happen. That’s why he didn't just leave money in that trust. He left a contingency plan. And that plan involves a man our mother spent four years convincing the world was dead to us.”

Detective Vance looked up sharply. “Who?”

“Our uncle,” Clara and I said in unison. “Dr. Marcus Sterling.”
