Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Gown

The IV pole rattled against the concrete floor as Ethan dragged his battered, bruised frame across the damp parking garage, his hospital gown fluttering open to reveal the jagged white surgical tape crisscrossing his abdomen.

My breath caught in my throat. Just minutes ago, he had been hooked to a mechanical ventilator in Room 402, trapped in a medically induced coma with a fractured femur and severe cranial trauma. Now here he was, standing under the flickering fluorescent lights of level B2, his face stark white and slick with cold sweat, staring down his former business partner with eyes burning with a desperate, reckless fury.

"Julian," Ethan rasped, his voice sounding like dry sandpaper scraping over stone. He caught himself against the hood of a parked car, his knees trembling violently under the weight of his own body. "Leave her out of this. It was all me."

Julian Vance didn't flinch. He didn't even look surprised. Instead, a slow, mocking smile spread across his face as he casually tucked his hands back into the pockets of his tailored jacket.

"Well, look who decided to wake up from his beauty sleep," Julian drawled, his tone laced with venomous amusement. "And here I thought you'd be sleeping off your concussion for another week, Ethan. Though, crawling out of the ICU with an active IV line attached to your arm? That’s a new level of melodrama, even for you."

"I heard every word," Ethan spat back, gasping for air as he clutched his bandaged side. He turned his head, his haunted eyes locking onto mine across the concrete gap. "Claire... I am so sorry. I never meant for any of this to touch you."

The apology tasted hollow, echoing against the concrete pillars like a cruel joke. Five years of marriage, five years of quiet devotion, all unraveling beneath the dripping ceiling of a subterranean parking garage while a corporate criminal smiled at us both.

"You forged my signature, Ethan," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that stopped him dead in his tracks. "You built a shell company, embezzled millions, and set me up to take the fall if your house of cards collapsed. Don't talk to me about apologies now."

Ethan flinched as if I had struck him across the face, his lips parting in a silent plea. But Julian stepped smoothly between us, cutting off the line of sight like a curtain closing on a tragedy.

"Save the domestic disputes for family court, you two," Julian interrupted, his voice hardening into steel. He reached back into his jacket, and this time, the heavy click of a small, suppressed firearm sliding free from a shoulder holster echoed clearly through the empty garage. "The federal marshals are auditing the primary accounts tonight. Either Ethan signs the asset transfer over to my holding firm right now, or both of you take the fall—and little Chloe and her baby get to watch you spend the next thirty years behind federal bars."

Ethan’s eyes widened with sheer panic, but before he could lunge forward, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the service stairwell behind us.

The heavy fire door swung violently wide open, and a squad of heavily armed security officers—accompanied by two men in dark windbreakers flashing federal badges—poured into the garage, shouting commands with their weapons drawn.
