Chapter 6 - The Amber Revelation

The amber emergency alert pierced the heavy afternoon air with a sharp, synthetic shriek, echoing off the stone pillars of the county courthouse. Grandma stared down at the document Julian had handed her, her breath catching in her throat, while my phone screen continued to flash a sickly yellow light in the palm of my trembling hand.

“Maya,” Grandma whispered, her voice dropping into a register of pure, unadulterated dread. “Look at your phone. Tell me who that message is from.”

I forced my thumb to swipe across the screen, dismissing the emergency broadcast banner to reveal the incoming multimedia message from the restricted number. The thumbnail image loaded slowly—a high-resolution photograph taken from the interior of a sterile, high-security hospital room.

It was Elena.

She wasn't strapped to a gurney or cringing under police guard. Instead, she was sitting up in her hospital bed, a white bandage wrapped neatly around her head, staring directly into the camera lens with a sickening, triumphant smirk. In her arms, wrapped in a hospital blanket, was a second newborn infant—an identical twin to little Leo, whom Grandma and I had assumed was an only child.

“What in God’s name...?” Julian muttered, leaning over my shoulder to peer at the screen. The color completely drained from his face as his eyes scanned the accompanying text message displayed beneath the photo.

The message read: Richard told you about the embezzlement. He told you about the trust. But he forgot to mention the insurance policy we took out on the twins four months ago. If I go down for child endangerment, the second baby goes into foster care within the hour. Drop the charges, or the state takes your heir.

My heart hammered against my ribs with the force of a sledgehammer. I looked down into the flannel bundle cradled securely in my arms. Sleeping peacefully against my chest was Leo. But the photograph on my phone proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Elena had given birth to twins at a private clinic across state lines—a fact Richard had deliberately kept hidden from Grandma and me to secure absolute leverage over the family estate.

“Twins,” I breathed, the word tasting like ash on my tongue. “She had twins. And we didn’t even know.”

Grandma’s knees buckled slightly, and Julian reacted instantly, catching her by the elbow to steady her against the stone balustrade. The fierce, queenly composure she had carried down the courthouse steps had shattered into a million jagged pieces, replaced by the agonizing terror of a mother realizing the trap was far larger than she had ever imagined.

“Julian,” Grandma ordered, her voice trembling with rage as she gripped his sleeve. “Get the federal prosecutor back on the phone. Tell him to throw out the bail restrictions, throw out the plea deals—do whatever it takes to keep Richard and that monster locked in a cage permanently.”

“It’s too late for that,” a cold, sharp voice interrupted from the bottom of the steps.

We all spun around. Standing near the curb, leaning against an unmarked county police cruiser, was Detective Vance. He looked grim, holding a newly printed manifest in his hand as he walked slowly back up the stone stairs toward us.

“Detective, what is this?” I demanded, stepping forward with Leo held safely against my shoulder. “That message—Elena claims she has a second baby. She’s blackmailing us!”

May you like

Detective Vance stopped in front of us, his eyes dark with professional exhaustion. “It’s not just blackmail, Miss Vance. We just received an emergency fax from the private maternity ward in Burlington. Elena discharged herself twenty minutes ago, aided by a forged court release order signed by a corrupt municipal judge on Richard’s payroll. She didn't just walk out of that hospital with the second child... she walked straight into a waiting getaway car driven by Richard’s defense attorney.”
