Chapter 7 - The Master of the Estate

Julian Vance walked into the living room as if he owned the mortgage, the foundation, and the very air we breathed. He didn't wait for an invitation; he simply selected the wingback armchair near the fireplace, set his leather briefcase neatly across his knees, and unlatched the brass clasps with a sharp, echoing snap.

Marcus slammed the front door shut, his face dark with fury as he stalked over to stand between Julian and us. “You have two minutes to explain why you’re standing in my home before I physically throw you out the front door, corporate suit or not.”

“Save your aggressive posturing for someone who cares, Marcus,” Julian said without looking up, pulling a thick stack of crimson-stamped legal files from his briefcase. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and finally raised his eyes. “Your stepmother Eleanor was a petty thief, yes. She manipulated your household accounts, forged power of attorney, and tried to bleed this property dry. But she was a mosquito compared to the systemic liabilities attached to Sarah’s will.”

I shifted Lily gently in the baby carrier, stepping up beside Marcus. “What does Sarah’s will have to do with the primary Vance estate? She was an independent graphic designer who grew up three states away.”

Julian’s gaze flicked to me, a flicker of genuine professional intrigue crossing his sharp features. “Ah, Miss Miller. The devoted godmother. According to our genealogical tracking and Sarah’s original sealed birth records—which Eleanor managed to suppress for four years—Sarah wasn't just an independent designer. She was the estranged granddaughter of Arthur Vance, patriarch of the primary trust. Which legally makes your little goddaughter, Lily, the sole surviving heir to twenty-one million dollars in corporate holdings.”

The living room went dead silent. The ticking of the mantel clock sounded like a drumbeat in the heavy air.

Marcus shook his head slowly, backing up a step until his legs hit the edge of the sofa. “That’s insane. Sarah never talked about wealthy relatives. She hated the corporate world. She worked herself to the bone just to pay off our first car.”

“Sarah spent her entire life running away from the shadow of the Vance name, just as your father did,” Julian replied coolly, sliding a certified document across the coffee table toward us. “Unfortunately for you, you cannot outrun a trust that owns the very land your house is built upon. When Eleanor forged those probate documents today, she didn't just steal your savings—she accidentally triggered a mandatory estate audit that exposed Sarah’s lineage to our central database.”

“And now that you know she’s an heir?” Marcus demanded, his voice trembling with protective rage. “What do you want? Another proxy war? Another vulture trying to carve up my family?”

May you like

“Not a vulture, Marcus,” Julian said, standing up slowly and buttoning his suit jacket. “An enforcement mechanism. Because Eleanor’s arrest has triggered a hostile asset freeze from a rival branch of the family—a branch led by a man named David Vance who would love nothing more than to see little Lily’s inheritance wiped out before she learns how to walk.”
