Chapter 7 - Steel and Shadows

The air inside the rail yard tasted of old coal dust, ozone, and sulfur.

We moved on foot, boots silent against the wet ballast stone. Javier held his suppressed weapon low, his eyes scanning the cavernous shadows between the towering grain elevators and the rusted hulls of idle freight trains.

Up ahead, a dim amber work light flickered above the sliding metal door of an old locomotive repair shed.

Parked directly in front of the shed was the black van. Its doors were wide open, the interior completely empty. A discarded burner phone lay face down on the driver’s seat, its screen still glowing with an active navigation map.

“Cleared,” Javier muttered, sweeping the perimeter before signaling me forward.

I stepped into the threshold of the repair shed, my boots crunching on shattered glass. The interior was massive, dominated by a dead diesel locomotive hoisted on industrial jacks. The smell of stale coffee and fear hung thick in the damp air.

Then I heard it—a muffled, rhythmic scraping sound coming from the upper catwalk overlooking the engine bay.

Javier caught my eye, pointing upward toward the iron stairs.

I motioned for him to take the left flank while I took the main staircase. Every step on the metal grating rang like a bell in the cavernous room, but there was no turning back now.

I reached the top landing, keeping my back pressed against the corrugated steel wall.

At the far end of the catwalk, illuminated by a single handheld mechanic's lamp, stood Khloe.

Her green slip dress was gone, replaced by a pair of oversized mechanics’ coveralls that hung off her slight frame. Her dark hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and her face was smudged with grease and dried mud. In her right hand, she held a compact encrypted flash drive—the three-terabyte digital anchor that had half the criminal underworld and federal intelligence agencies hunting her across state lines.

She turned sharply as my boot scraped the grating, her breath catching in her throat. She didn't scream. She didn't drop the drive. Instead, her eyes widened with a mix of exhaustion and fatalistic defiance.

“You’re remarkably hard to shake, Mr. Rossi,” Khloe said, her voice shaking only slightly as she backed up against the railing, staring down twenty feet into the concrete floor below.
