Chapter 5 - The Perimeter Breach

Roman’s expression went completely dead.

The relaxed, conversational atmosphere shattered into a million pieces. In less than a second, the charismatic, attentive son vanished, replaced entirely by the ruthless underground kingpin who commanded an empire built on concrete, steel, and blood.

He took the phone from Paul’s shaking hand without a word.

“Moretti,” he barked into the receiver.

Harper watched him closely. The muscle in his jaw ticked rhythmically. He listened in absolute silence for ten agonizing seconds, his dark eyes reflecting the warm, dim lighting of the alcove like twin pools of obsidian.

“Secure the southern gate,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a lethal, clipped cadence. “Shoot first, ask questions when the bleeding stops. I’m on my way.”

He hung up the phone and tossed it back onto Paul’s chest. The manager nearly dropped it, scrambling backward before practically throwing himself into the kitchen.

Roman stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the mahogany floor.

“Mother,” Roman said, his voice softening just enough as he turned to Beatatrice. “We have to leave. Now.”

Beatatrice didn't panic. She had lived her entire life in the shadow of her son’s warzones. She nodded calmly, reaching out to pat his hand. Go. Do what you must do.

Roman looked down at Harper. His expression was unreadable, a complex tangle of warning, curiosity, and lingering frustration.

“This conversation isn't finished, Harper Hayes,” Roman said, leaning down slightly so only she could hear.

“I wasn't aware we were having a conversation, Mr. Moretti,” Harper replied, her chin tilted up defiantly. “I was just waiting for my shift to end.”

Roman held her gaze for a beat too long. Then, without another word, he turned sharply, signaling his four bodyguards. They moved in immediate lockstep, forming a protective wedge around Beatatrice as they hurried toward the private exit.

Within thirty seconds, the south alcove was empty.

The air still smelled faintly of white truffles and aged bourbon, but the oppressive, terrifying gravity of Roman Moretti’s presence had lifted, leaving Harper sitting alone at the table with three unopened menus and a half-filled glass of water.

Harper exhaled a breath she felt like she’d been holding for an hour. Her hands were shaking. She stood up so quickly her chair wobbled.

She needed to get back to the kitchen, clock out, strip off her uniform, and disappear back into the anonymity of the city where she belonged. Men like Roman Moretti were storms—you didn't try to understand them, you simply survived them and prayed they never crossed your path again.

Ten minutes later, Harper had changed into her worn denim jacket and faded canvas sneakers. She grabbed her backpack from the employee locker room, punched out on the digital time clock, and slipped out the back service exit into the cool, damp night air of the alleyway.

The alley was quiet, illuminated only by a flickering yellow sodium streetlamp overhead.

Harper pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders and began walking briskly toward the subway entrance two blocks away.

She turned the corner onto Maple Street, keeping her head down, her boots clicking softly against the concrete.

As she passed a dark, recessed doorway beside an abandoned flower shop, a large, heavy hand shot out from the shadows.

Before she could scream, a warm, calloused palm clamped firmly over her mouth, and a powerful arm banded around her waist, yanking her backward off the pavement and into the absolute blackness of the alcove.

Harper lashed out instinctively, driving her elbow backward with all her weight.

It connected solidly against a hard, unyielding chest, but her captor didn't even grunt. Instead, a low, familiar voice rumbled right against her ear, warm and amused.

“Nice reflexes,” Roman Moretti whispered in the dark. “Though hitting your employer is generally frowned upon.”

Harper froze. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as Roman slowly lowered his hand from her mouth, keeping her pinned securely against the brick wall of the alley.
