Chapter 10 - The Garden's New Roots

The afternoon sun broke through the gray overcast of downtown, casting a warm, golden light across the thirty-story penthouse terrace of the Morgan estate.
The marble patio had been partially cleared of its exotic, manicured ferns. In their place stood a small, freshly dug plot of rich, dark earth—imported soil brought back from the Shadows, mixed with the soil Tommy had carried in his bucket.
Alexander stood at the edge of the terrace, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, watching as Tommy carefully planted two small saplings—one for his mother, one for his sister—while Elena stood close by, her face softened by a quiet peace she hadn't known in years.
The penthouse doors slid open, and Maria stepped out onto the terrace holding a thick sheaf of legal documents and a freshly brewed cup of black coffee.
“The D.A.’s office has formally resigned under federal pressure,” Maria reported, handing him the papers. “Vance is cooperating with federal investigators, and the municipal trust papers for the Shadows have been signed and filed with the state Supreme Court.”
Alexander took the documents, setting them aside on the marble table without looking at them. He knelt down beside Tommy, wiping a smudge of dirt from the boy's cheek with his thumb.
“How does it look, partner?” Alexander asked softly.
Tommy stood up, brushing his small hands together, and looked down at the freshly turned earth beneath the towering skyscrapers of the city below. For the first time since they had met, a bright, genuine smile broke across the boy's face.

“It looks like home,” Tommy said.
Alexander stood beside him, looking out over the sprawling expanse of the city as the afternoon light turned the glass towers into sheets of shimmering gold. The sanctuary he had built to isolate himself from the world was gone, replaced by something far more enduring—a bridge connecting two worlds that would never be strangers again.
