Chapter 8 - The Sixty-Second Countdown

Across the room, the laptop screen—still miraculously functioning despite its slide across the floor—flashed a bright, pulsing amber warning.
UPLOAD PROGRESS: 94%... 95%... 96%...
Grace bolted across the open space, ignoring the struggling men by the wall. She dropped to her knees in front of the terminal, her eyes scanning the complex command lines scrolling across the monitor at blinding speed.
“Grace, get away from there! It’s rigged!” James shouted, throwing the operative to the floor with a heavy thud and rushing toward the desk.
“No, Mr. Whitmore! If it hits 100%, the encryption key self-destructs and the offshore accounts are wiped clean of any tracking data!” Grace’s fingers flew across the keyboard with astonishing speed, a lifetime of executive-level systems knowledge kicking in.
97%... 98%...
The operative groaned, struggling to his feet and reaching for a tactical knife concealed in his boot. But before he could draw the blade, James pivoted, driving a swift, devastating kick straight into the man’s chest. The operative collapsed back onto the carpet, unconscious.
99%...
Grace smashed the physical master kill-switch located beneath the lower molding of the terminal desk just as the progress bar hit the edge.
ABORT COMMAND RECEIVED. CONNECTION SEVERED.
The screen flashed a sudden, glaring red: ERROR: DATA RETRIEVAL INTERRUPTED. SECURE VAULT LOCKED.
The room plunged into absolute silence, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of James and Grace echoing off the high mahogany ceiling. The download had been frozen with four percent remaining—just enough to preserve the transactional metadata linking Arthur Sterling directly to the embezzlement scheme, but locking the primary funds safely within the corporate firewall.
Grace slumped back against the base of the conference table, burying her face in her hands as a long, shuddering sigh escaped her chest.
“We did it,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “The ledger is safe. The audit trail is intact.”
James walked over, offering her a hand. He pulled her gently to her feet, his expression a mix of fierce respect and profound gratitude. “You saved the entire company, Grace. More importantly, you saved the truth.”
Before Grace could reply, the secure internal elevator chime rang out with a loud, cheerful ding.
Ding.

Both of them froze. The elevator doors slid open with mechanical precision, breaking the quiet dawn.
Step by heavy step, the sound of polished leather shoes clicked against the marble floor of the elevator lobby.
