Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Prosecutor

The stranger walked across the frozen grass with slow, deliberate strides, his expensive leather shoes crunching over the frost. He didn't look at Eleanor, nor did he look at me. His cold, calculating eyes locked entirely onto Madeline and the three infants shivering in her arms.
“Arthur Vance,” the man said, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority that commanded the space around us. “And Eleanor Vance. What a remarkably poetic family reunion.”
I stepped defensively in front of Madeline and the babies, my fists clenching at my sides. “Identify yourself.”
“My name is Richard Vale,” the man replied smoothly, sliding his hands into his coat pockets. “Though your COO Julian was screaming my name quite loudly over the phone just moments ago before my compliance team cut off his lines.”
My blood ran cold. Richard Vale. The legendary Wall Street liquidator and venture capitalist—a man who operated entirely in the dark corners of federal finance, systematically dismantling corrupt dynasties before they even realized they were bleeding.
“You’re the one who shorted our portfolio,” I said, a dangerous edge creeping into my voice. “You engineered the hostile takeover.”
“I didn't engineer a hostile takeover, Arthur. I executed an eviction,” Richard corrected, his smile fading into a hard line. He pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and tossed it onto the bench beside Madeline. “Your mother spent thirty years building an empire on forged contracts, financial extortion, and the quiet destruction of anyone who stood in her way. She thought she was untouchable because she owned half the judges in Manhattan.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, ragged gasp, clutching her chest. “You... you’re the one behind the federal audit. You leaked the files.”
“I didn't leak them. I gathered them,” Richard said coldly. Then, his gaze shifted back to me, softening just a fraction. “Five years ago, Arthur, your mother destroyed another family. She forged a severance letter, threatened a defenseless young woman with fabricated legal charges, and forced her out onto the streets of Queens with nothing but the clothes on her back.”
My head whipped around toward Madeline. She was staring at Richard Vale with wide, stunned eyes.
“You... you knew?” Madeline whispered.
“I knew the moment my investigators traced the shell company that funded your illegal eviction back to Eleanor’s private offshore accounts,” Richard said quietly. He took a step closer, looking down at the three infants. “These children are my grandchildren’s cousins, Ms. Hayes. And unlike certain people in this park, I believe in protecting family.”
I stared at Richard, the pieces of the nightmare finally locking into a terrifying, massive puzzle. “You didn't just come here to dismantle my company. You came to finish us.”
May you like
“No, Arthur,” Richard said, his eyes locking onto mine with lethal clarity. “I came to give you a choice. You can go down with your mother’s sinking ship, or you can prove that you’re finally a man.”
