Chapter 10 - The Calm Before the Storm

The rain had stopped, leaving the city wrapped in a heavy, freezing mist that swallowed the streetlamps and coated the asphalt in a slick layer of gray ice.
Outside the abandoned transit station, the engine of a stolen black sedan hummed quietly in the shadows.
Mave sat in the passenger seat, the heavy tactical vest feeling uncomfortably tight across her chest, the submachine gun resting awkwardly between her knees. In the back seat, Bruno sat completely upright, his breath pluming in the cold air, his massive shoulders tense and ready.
In the driver’s seat, Dante adjusted his rearview mirror, his face pale from blood loss but his hands completely steady on the steering wheel. He shifted the car into gear, the tires crunching softly against the gravel.
"When we get to the North End estate," Dante instructed without looking at her, his voice low and even, "stay behind me, keep your head down, and if anyone moves toward you that isn't me or the dog, you pull the trigger without asking questions."
Mave swallowed hard, her knuckles white around the grip of the weapon. "And if we make it out of there?"
May you like
Dante turned the steering wheel, pulling out onto the dark, rain-slicked highway leading toward the heart of the syndicate's territory.
"Then we buy you a new Honda," Dante said softly, stepping hard on the gas as the car surged forward into the dark. "With a heater that actually works."
