Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Boardroom

High miles above downtown Dallas, the top-floor executive suite of Hale Enterprises was bathed in the cool blue glow of city lights. Richard Hale swirled the remaining vintage cabernet in his crystal glass, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling empire he had built on the bones of his rivals.

Across the room, his chief financial officer, Marcus Vance—Vanessa’s older brother—tapped nervously on a polished tablet screen.

“The quarterly audits from the regional banks are clearing tomorrow morning, Richard,” Marcus said, his voice tight with an edge of anxiety. “Once the final title deeds transfer from the old Whitmore trust into our corporate holdings, the acquisition will be 100% legally bulletproof. No trace back to us.”

Richard took a slow, deliberate sip of his wine, a cold smile touching the corners of his lips. “It took us five years of corporate maneuvering to bleed those old dinosaurs dry. The crash of their private jet was merely the final stroke of efficiency.”

“And Emma?” Marcus asked cautiously. “She’s still locked down in the basement. If she doesn't receive medical attention for those ribs soon—”

“Let her rot,” Richard interrupted coldly, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. “She’s a liability. Once the properties are transferred tomorrow, we’ll quietly divorce her, claim she fled the state due to mental instability, and sweep her under the rug just like her parents.”

Suddenly, the sleek wall-mounted intercom on the mahogany desk crackled to life. Static hissed through the speakers before the security desk downstairs chimed in.

“Mr. Hale? Sir, we have an emergency on the ground floor lobby.”

Richard frowned, pressing the speaker button. “What kind of emergency? Security protocols are locked down for the night.”

“It’s not local security, sir,” the guard’s voice trembled, echoing with panic. “Federal marshals... accompanied by a private detail bearing high-level clearance from the Texas State Banking Commission. They’re seizing the building’s primary server banks. They aren't presenting a standard warrant, Mr. Hale. They’re presenting a sovereign asset freeze.”

Richard’s blood ran cold. He slammed his hand onto the desk. “By whose authority?!”

Before the guard could answer, the heavy oak doors of the executive suite blew wide open, splintering against the reinforced walls.
