Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three days later, the rain had completely cleared, leaving Seattle bathed in the crisp, golden brilliance of an autumn afternoon. The air smelled of clean pine and salt water as our car turned down the private, tree-lined drive toward our home.

It was the same house, but it felt entirely different. The ghosts that had haunted every hallway for a decade and a half were gone, banished by the bright, laughing voices echoing through the front doors.

Thomas stepped out of the passenger side, hesitating for a moment on the gravel driveway. He looked up at the grand architecture of the house where I had lived a half-life of mourning.

Emily jumped out behind him, grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the steps. "Come on, Thomas! You have to see your room. Mom had them set it up just like you used to like it—well, except for the toys, since you're kind of tall now!"

Thomas laughed—a bright, unburdened sound that brought fresh tears to my eyes.

I walked up the stone steps behind them, unlocking the heavy oak door and swinging it wide open to let the warm sunlight flood the foyer.

As Thomas stepped across the threshold, dropping his old, worn-out hoodie onto the bench by the door, he turned back to look at me, his blue eyes shining with absolute peace.

"We're really home?" he asked softly, as if he still couldn't quite believe the nightmare was over.

I walked over, wrapped my arms around both of my children, pulling them close against my heart, and smiled through my tears.

"We're home," I whispered. "And we're never, ever going back."
