Chapter 1 - The Office on Madison

The autumn air outside the high-rise on Madison Avenue cut like broken glass, but the sweat on the back of my neck was entirely my own.

I pushed through the heavy glass doors of my attorney’s office suite, ignoring the receptionist as I strode down the muted hallway. Marcus Vance didn’t look up as I shoved his inner office door open. He sat behind his sleek walnut desk, his fingers steepled, looking at a thick manila folder that sat dead center like an unexploded bomb.

“You’re twenty minutes late, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice flat and devoid of its usual polished warmth.

“Traffic on the bridge was a nightmare,” I lied, dropping into the leather chair opposite him. My heart was hammering against my ribs. “What is this about Vanessa? My personal life is messy, Marcus, I get it, but it has nothing to do with my custody rights. Claire walked out. She took my son. That’s abduction.”

Marcus let out a slow, deliberate breath. He slid the manila folder across the desk toward me. The tab was handwritten in neat, precise block letters: CARTER HOLDINGS & ASSET RECONSTRUCTION.

“Your wife didn’t just pack a bag and run away crying, Julian,” Marcus said softly. “If she had, we’d have a standard emergency injunction filed by noon. But she didn’t go to a domestic violence shelter or her mother’s house in Connecticut. Do you know where she went?”

I stared at the folder, my throat dry. “Where?”

“She spent the last three months retaining the most aggressive family law and forensic accounting litigator in the tristate area,” Marcus replied, leaning forward. “And she didn’t use our joint checking accounts. She used a retainer funded by an independent corporate ledger you haven’t looked at in four years.”

I frowned, reaching out and flipping the folder open. Inside were printed bank statements, corporate resolutions, and wire transfer logs.

“That’s impossible,” I muttered, scanning the pages. “I oversee every corporate account under Carter Holdings. Every dollar—”

“Every dollar of the public portfolio, yes,” Marcus interrupted. “But not the shadow subsidiary you set up in Delaware back when you merged with Meridian Logistics. The subsidiary you used to hide your proprietary tech development... and the corporate discretionary funds you’ve been funneling straight into Vanessa Cole’s high-end lifestyle for the past six months.”

My blood ran cold. The numbers on the page didn’t just show dinners at the Grand Meridian. They showed corporate embezzlement, tax evasion, and a systematic transfer of intellectual property rights signed over to an entity owned entirely by Vanessa.

And Claire had the certified copies of every single transaction.

“She didn’t just find out about your mistress, Julian,” Marcus said, his eyes fixed on mine with terrifying clarity. “Your wife has proof that you committed federal wire fraud to fund your affair. And she filed it all with the U.S. Attorney’s office thirty-six hours before she walked out the front door.”
