Chapter 4 - The Mother’s Confession

Patricia dropped the paper bag. A carton of milk hit the linoleum floor, bursting open and splashing white liquid across the polished tiles.

For three seconds, the formidable matriarch who had watched me scream at the bottom of the stairs—who had coldly told me my marriage came before my ambitions—looked entirely diminished, like a punctured balloon.

"Who... what is this?" Patricia stammered, her hands flying up to clutch her pearls. "You can't be in here! This is a private hospital room! I demand to see my son!"

Agent Miller stepped forward, closing the distance between them with terrifying calm. He didn't raise his voice, but every word carried the weight of a federal indictment.

"Mrs. Vance, you are currently standing as an accessory to aggravated assault, premeditated identity fraud, and the obstruction of a federal military officer," Miller said, flashing his badge directly in her face. "Step inside and close the door, or you will be placed in federal custody right here in this hallway."

Patricia swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. She backed into the room, her eyes darting frantically toward my bed as if looking for an ally.

"Elena," she whimpered, shifting instantly into her pathetic, victimized persona. "Sweetheart, tell them this is a misunderstanding. Victor was just trying to protect you! You were working too hard, pushing yourself past the breaking point! We only wanted to take care of you!"

I pushed myself up against the hospital pillows, staring down at her with a gaze so cold it made her recoil.

"You didn't want to take care of me, Patricia," I said, my voice steady and lethal. "You wanted to own me. Just like you own Victor. The two of you thought that if I couldn't walk, I couldn't leave. You thought my uniform was a threat to your little fiefdom."

Patricia’s trembling facade suddenly snapped. The fragile, sweet-old-lady act melted away, replaced by the bitter, venomous hatred that had fueled her insults for years.

"You ungrateful little bitch!" Patricia hissed, stepping toward the bed before Agent Miller’s partner stepped between us with a heavy hand on his holster. "You think you're so high and mighty with your gold bars and your ambitions! You walked into our family like you owned the place, trying to drag my son away into some distant military base where we couldn't control him! You deserved that fall! If Victor hadn't done it, I would have picked up that crowbar myself!"

The confession hung in the sterile air of Room 314, crystal clear and absolute.

Agent Miller tapped the recording device clipped inside his breast pocket. "Got every word of that, command post. Warrant is confirmed."

Patricia’s face went chalk white as she realized what she had just done. She spun around toward the door, lunging for the knob, but Agent Miller’s partner caught her by the shoulder, spinning her around and slapping a pair of heavy steel zip-cuffs around her wrists with a sharp zip.

"Patricia Vance, you are under federal arrest," the investigator recited monotonously.

As they dragged my weeping, shrieking mother-in-law out into the corridor, the door swung halfway open, revealing Victor walking down the hallway toward the room with a cheerful bouquet of carnations in his hand.
