Chapter 8 - The Stairwell Ambush

The heavy thud of running boots reverberated up the concrete stairwell like rolling thunder, growing louder with every second.
“The freight elevator shaft,” Evelyn said, her voice completely devoid of panic as she tucked the Veritas binder securely under her arm. She grabbed Clara’s sleeve, pulling her away from the broken glass of the executive office door and toward the rear service corridor. “It connects directly to the subterranean parking level. The municipal receivers didn't update the override switch.”
They sprinted down the narrow hallway just as the front double-doors of the executive suite blew inward with a splintering crash.
“Clear the floor! Check the offices!” a gruff, tactical voice roared from the darkness behind them.
Evelyn threw her weight against the heavy fire door leading to the service stairwell, sliding through just as a flashlight beam sliced across the hallway wall where they had been standing a moment before. She jammed the heavy iron service bar into place with a wooden wedge she snatched from a janitorial bucket, buying them a precious thirty seconds of resistance.
“Down, down, down,” Evelyn urged, taking the concrete steps three at a time despite her prison-worn boots.
Halfway down to the basement level, the door above them exploded outward with a deafening bang as someone kicked through the wedge.
“They’re in the stairwell!” a voice shouted from above. “Cut them off at the lower landing!”
A heavy-caliber round ricocheted off the concrete wall right beside Evelyn’s head, sending a shower of sharp stone fragments stinging across her cheek.
“They’re shooting to kill!” Clara cried out, ducking low as another round punched a smoking hole through the steel handrail.
“They aren't cops, Clara,” Evelyn yelled back, reaching the heavy metal exit door at the bottom of the stairwell and throwing her entire body against the push-bar. “Corporate clean-up doesn't leave witnesses.”
The door burst open into the freezing, dimly lit expanse of the underground parking garage. The cavernous space was filled with rows of empty concrete pillars and shadowed corners. Across the lot sat Clara’s black sedan, its headlights winking off in the distance.
As they sprinted toward the car, a pair of matte-black SUVs roared down the entrance ramp, their high beams blindingly bright as they cut off the exit lane in a screech of burning rubber.
