Chapter 8 - Returning to the Estate

The iron gates of the Christopher estate loomed ahead of us through the midday mist, their intricate wrought-iron scrolls bearing the faded gold crest of a family whose legacy was currently tearing itself apart from the inside out.

Samuel’s sedan rolled slowly up the crushed-stone driveway, crunching over the frozen gravel as we approached the grand double doors of the mansion.

The estate looked just as it had for the last eighteen years—immaculate, imposing, and eerily silent. But as we stepped out of the car, the heavy scent of sweet-smelling accelerant hung faintly in the damp winter air, carried on the wind from the service wing around the back.

“Did you smell that?” Samuel whispered, his hand sliding into his overcoat pocket.

“Gasoline,” I said flatly, pulling the heavy brass keys from my handbag. “Justin didn't just send a brick through my window. He sent someone here to torch the study before we could inspect the safe.”

We didn't wait. I rushed up the wide stone steps, jammed the brass key into the massive oak front door, and turned it. The heavy lock yielded with a familiar, satisfying click, and we pushed our way inside into the soaring, marble-floored foyer.

The grand crystal chandelier overhead cast a cold, flickering light across the silent hallway. Everything was undisturbed on the surface, but as we crossed toward the east wing where Mr. Christopher’s private study was located, a thin wisp of gray smoke curled out from beneath the mahogany double doors.

“Stay behind me,” Samuel muttered, reaching for the brass handle.

He threw the door open.

Thick white smoke billowed out from the corner of the room, where a pile of legal briefs and heavy velvet drapes had been deliberately stacked against the antique oak bookshelf and set ablaze. On the floor beside the fire, a shattered glass bottle soaked in fuel glistened under the flames.

Without a moment of hesitation, I grabbed a heavy wool decorative rug from the hallway floor, ran into the smoky room, and threw it squarely over the burning pile, smothering the hungry flames before they could reach the antique wainscoting.

Coughing from the acrid smoke, I kicked the smoldering fabric away and looked toward the far wall.

The hidden panel behind Mr. Christopher’s mahogany desk—the wall safe where the true master deeds and video ledger were kept—was standing wide open, its steel door scratched and clawed by a digital override tool.
