Chapter 8 - The Cornered Titan

The silence that followed my mother’s revelation was broken only by the faint, cheerful jingle of a plastic toy in the next room where Luke had gone back to playing with his fire truck, completely unaware that our world was dissolving into ash.
“They can’t touch what’s already gone,” I said, leaning both palms flat against the wooden dining table. “I resigned. I walked away from the board. I gave up the CEO title.”
“You think walking away from a title shields you from federal racketeering charges, Damon?” Eleanor sneered, leaning forward across the table. “Calder isn't after the CEO. He’s after the bloodline. He wants the Prescott name publicly disgraced, liquidated, and erased from the corporate registry. And he knows that the only way to execute a clean takeover of the medical platform is to make sure neither you nor your children ever see a single cent of the trust.”
Cassandra stood frozen near the kitchen counter, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as she looked between my mother and me. The betrayal in her eyes wasn't directed at me anymore; it was directed at the generational curse that had linked our families in malice long before we ever met in college.
“So this is why you came here,” Cassandra said, her voice dangerously quiet. “Not to visit your grandchildren. Not to make peace. You came to find a shield.”
“I came to offer a weapon,” Eleanor corrected sharply. She tapped a thick sheaf of papers at the bottom of the pile. “Calder thinks he holds all the cards because he has the probate files from nineteen-ninety-two. But he doesn't know that the original patent was never registered under the Prescott corporate umbrella. It was registered under a dual-beneficiary family trust—a trust that requires the signature of both the Prescott and the Hayes bloodlines to legally dissolve.”
I looked at Cassandra. The realization hit us both at the exact same moment.
“The twins,” I whispered.
“Yes,” Eleanor said, her voice softening just a fraction. “Luke and Violet aren't just your children, Damon. Under the original partnership clause written by our grandfathers, they are the sole legal heirs to both estates. If Calder tries to liquidate Prescott Technologies without their notarized consent, the entire acquisition triggers an automatic federal receivership freeze that blocks him from touching the software platform for the next decade.”
Cassandra walked slowly over to the table, her gaze fixed on the yellowed papers. She didn't look angry anymore; she looked like a woman who had just realized she was holding a loaded weapon in the middle of a war zone.

“And if we sign?” Cassandra asked softly.
“If you sign,” Eleanor said, standing up to face her eye-to-eye, “we pool our resources, execute a hostile counter-suit against Calder for corporate extortion, and destroy him before the markets open on Monday morning.”
