Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Past

The name Delgato hung in the sterile air of the servants' quarters like an uninvited ghost.

Marcus Ellery shifted his weight, his hand instantly moving toward the heavy revolver holstered beneath his suit jacket. The silence that followed Selena’s words was more terrifying than any shouted warning. In the Arizona desert, the Delgato family wasn't just a name; it was an era of blood and ash that Damon Reyes had spent the last five years trying to bury beneath legitimate real estate deeds, municipal contracts, and the clean facades of the Reyes Syndicate.

“Are you certain of the voice, Selena?” Damon asked, his voice steady, though his fingers tightened instinctively around Ruby, who had buried her face against his shoulder. “Did he mention a specific name?”

“No,” she whispered, her hands still trembling as she tossed a pair of socks into the canvas duffel bag. “Just the threat. He said they were coming for the house tonight. He said... he said you couldn't protect anyone anymore.”

Damon looked past her, out the narrow window toward the sprawling, sun-baked perimeter of the estate. The Reyes compound was built like a fortress—high adobe walls, security cameras covering every square inch of the desert approaches, and a private guard force numbering over two dozen armed men. But a fortress was only as good as the men inside it, and a war with the Delgatos wasn't fought with cameras. It was fought with fire and silence.

“Marcus,” Damon said without turning around.

“Already on it,” Marcus replied, his eyes sharp and analytical. “I’m calling a full lockdown on the perimeter. Every patrol unit doubled. We move Selena and the little one to the safehouse in Tucson immediately.”

“No,” Damon said softly.

Marcus stopped, a frown cutting across his weathered face. “Damon, if the Delgatos are moving on the compound tonight, you can't stay here. The target is you. If they find the girl—”

“They won't find anyone,” Damon interrupted, setting Ruby down gently and kneeling to look into her big, frightened eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn silver medallion—a Saint Christopher medal his own father had given him when he was six. He pressed it into her tiny palm. “Ruby, listen to me. Marcus is going to take you and your mother on a very long car ride. You’re going to play a game of being quiet mice, okay? No talking until you reach the safehouse.”

She clutched the medallion tightly, nodding with solemn, heartbreaking maturity.

“Damon, what about you?” Selena cried out, grabbing his arm. “You can’t stay here alone to face them! That’s suicide!”

May you like

“I’m not staying alone,” Damon said, standing up and straightening his jacket. He turned to Marcus. “Get them out the service gate. Use the decoy SUV. Make sure nobody sees which vehicle they take. And then... bring the rest of the boys back inside. If the Delgatos want my house, I’m going to be sitting in the living room waiting for them.”
