Chapter 6 - The Breach

The wood of the bedroom door didn't just open; it shattered inward, raining splinters across the pale blue rug where I had felt safe only seconds before.
Daniel moved with terrifying speed, shoving me back against the pillows and positioning his broad frame squarely between the bed and the shattered doorway. His face had gone entirely blank—the mask of a billionaire whose world had just been invaded, whose boundaries had been violently crossed.
“Stay behind me, Emma,” he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that left no room for argument.
Two men in dark tactical gear stepped through the broken frame, followed closely by a woman in a sharp gray pantsuit carrying a heavy leather briefcase and a binder stamped with the state seal. Behind them in the hallway, I could see the silhouette of Josh, standing frozen in his dinosaur pajamas, crying out for his father before a security guard gently pulled him back.
“Mr. Anderson, step away from the child,” the woman in the gray suit demanded, her voice cutting through the smoke-and-dust air of the room. She held up an official-looking document as if it were a shield. “I am Director Hayes with the Oregon Department of Human Services, Child Welfare Division. By emergency judicial order signed ten minutes ago, this minor is being placed into immediate state protective custody.”
Daniel didn't flinch. He stood his ground, his fists clenched at his sides so tightly his knuckles turned white. “You broke into my private residence in the middle of the night on a forged or expedited emergency warrant without local law enforcement coordination. You have no jurisdiction here.”
“We have a signed warrant from Judge Callahan based on an anonymous emergency tip filed thirty minutes ago,” Director Hayes snapped, stepping further into the room while her tactical escorts flanked her, their hands resting near their utility belts. “The tip states that a multi-millionaire CEO has unlawfully detained a missing unhoused minor without notifying authorities, bypassing medical evaluation, and concealing her from state oversight. That constitutes kidnapping under state law, Mr. Anderson.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, choking me. The word kidnapping echoed in my head like a siren.
They think he stole me.
“He didn't kidnap me!” I screamed, my voice cracking raw as I scrambled forward on the mattress, clutching the lavender-scented blanket around my shoulders. “He saved me! I ran away from the alley! Please don't take me back there!”
Director Hayes softened her expression just a fraction, looking at me with a practiced, pitying gaze that felt colder than the rain outside. “It’s alright, Emma. You’re safe now. You’re coming with us to a secure evaluation center where professionals can take care of you.”

“She is not going anywhere with you,” Daniel said, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal, quiet register that made even the armed agents hesitate. He slowly reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. “My legal team is already on a conference line with the chief judge of the district court. This warrant is going to be rescinded before you make it down the front stairs.”
“Try making the call, Mr. Anderson,” Director Hayes challenged, stepping right up to him. She motioned to the tactical officers. “Secure the minor.”
