Chapter 8 - Subterranean Warfare

The air inside the steam tunnels was thick, hot, and reeked of sulfur, rust, and decades of decaying urban runoff. Water dripped in a relentless, maddening rhythm from the corroded iron pipes overhead, splashing against our shoulders as we scrambled through the narrow concrete conduit.

Ethan slipped on a slick patch of algae, crashing hard onto his knees with a muffled curse.

“Get up, Ethan!” I snapped, not stopping for a second as I crawled through the muck. “If you slow us down, I will leave you down here to feed the rats.”

“I can’t... my ankle is sprained,” Ethan panted, sweat pouring down his pale face, his expensive designer clothes soaked in filthy subterranean water. “How are you even doing this, Claire? Six months ago you couldn't run a block without losing your breath!”

“Six months ago, I was married to a coward who drained my spirit and left me for dead,” I shot back over my shoulder, my eyes locked on the faint amber glow of the exit junction fifty yards ahead. “Now, I have three daughters to protect. You don't get to quit.”

Up ahead, Julian stopped abruptly, raising his hand to signal silence. He pressed his ear against the heavy cast-iron maintenance ladder that led up to the street-level manhole cover.

“Voices,” Julian whispered, his hand sliding back to the grip of his pistol. “Above us. Two guards. They’ve deployed scouts down the utility lines.”

“Can we bypass them?” I whispered back, crawling up beside him in the muck.

“Negative. This junction is a choke point. If we try to squeeze past, they’ll spot us instantly.” Julian looked down at me, his dark eyes hardening with a quiet, desperate resolve. “Claire, listen to me. If things go sideways here, take the eastern drainage pipe. It leads straight to the river docks. Don't look back.”

“I’m not leaving you, Julian,” I said fiercely. “We go together or not at all.”

Before Julian could argue, a blinding beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight cut through the darkness from the tunnel ahead.

“Found some rats in the pipe!” a harsh voice echoed down the concrete tube.

Bang! Bang!

Bullet sparks ricocheted off the iron walls inches from our heads, filling the cramped tunnel with the deafening roar of gunfire and the acrid smell of cordite.

Julian didn't hesitate. He surged forward out of the shadow, returning fire with three rapid, flawless shots that silenced the flashlight beam instantly. The heavy thud of a body hitting the concrete floor echoed through the drain.

“Clear!” Julian called out, waving us forward. “Move, move, move!”

We scrambled past the fallen guard, pushing our way toward the iron ladder that led directly into the sub-basement of our Manhattan building.
