Chapter 8 - The Border Chase

The late afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on the asphalt of Route 125 as we barreled south, the arid hills of San Diego County blurring into a streak of dry brush and concrete overpasses.

“He’s exiting onto Route 905 heading west,” Marcus announced, his eyes darting between the digital map and the rushing traffic ahead. “He’s making a run for the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. If he crosses into Baja, our jurisdiction stops.”

I gripped the passenger-side door handle, my mind racing. Gavin wasn't just running out of desperation; he was executing a scorched-earth strategy designed to ensure that if he couldn't have the family fortune, no one else would—not Walter, not Raymond, and certainly not me.

“Can we overtake him?” I asked, my voice steady, fueled by the same surgical adrenaline that had kept me calm through countless medical crises.

“Watch out!” Marcus suddenly shouted, spinning the steering wheel hard to the left.

A dark gray sedan slammed across two lanes of traffic just fifty yards ahead of us, its tires screeching as it violently cut toward the off-ramp. It was Gavin’s car. Even from a distance, I could spot the distinctive dent on the rear passenger door—the one he had caused backing into the warehouse loading bay three weeks ago.

“Hold on!” Marcus warned, slamming his foot down on the accelerator.

Our sedan surged forward, closing the gap between us and Gavin’s vehicle with heart-stopping speed. The digital tracker on the console beeped frantically: Target within 100 feet.

Gavin must have looked in his rearview mirror and realized he was being hunted. His brake lights flashed red, and instead of taking the port of entry ramp, he swerved sharply onto an unpaved industrial maintenance road running parallel to the border fence, kicking up a massive, blinding cloud of yellow dust.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He jerked our steering wheel off the paved highway, plunging our vehicle straight into the thick dust trail, trailing Gavin’s car wildly across the rough desert terrain.

Through the swirling dust, I saw Gavin’s car slide to a violent halt against a locked chain-link maintenance gate marked Authorized Personnel Only.

Before Gavin could throw his car into reverse, Marcus rammed our bumper squarely against his rear quarter-panel, pinning his vehicle immovably against the steel gate.
