Chapter 1 - The Key to the Empire

Mr. Reeves’s hands hovered over the worn cedar wood of the box as if it were radioactive. The faint hum of the overhead air vent was the only sound in the small, carpeted office.
“Your grandfather, Arthur Hale, wasn’t just a retired timber merchant, Miss Hale,” the branch manager said, his voice dropping to a harsh, nervous whisper. “Decades ago, before the conglomerate buyouts and the corporate mergers, Arthur Hale owned the underlying land rights to over seventy percent of the commercial sector in this county, including the real estate under your father’s manufacturing company.”
I stared at him, my arms still crossed against the winter chill. “My father owns Hale & Associates. He talks about it every Thanksgiving.”
Mr. Reeves offered a humorless, tight-lipped smile. “Your father manages Hale & Associates on a revocable lease. A lease that your grandfather held in a private trust—and which he transferred directly into your name three days before he passed away.”

He reached out, pressing a small, hidden brass latch on the side of the cedar box. A secret compartment sprang open with a soft click, revealing a thick stack of heavy parchment documents stamped with state seals and notary signatures, along with a heavy iron safety deposit key.
“Your father’s business, his corporate accounts, his line of credit, and even the deed to the family home where you were just locked out,” Mr. Reeves whispered, sliding the papers toward me, “are entirely dependent on the trust agreement inside this box. And right now... you are the sole trustee.”
