Chapter 9 - The Voice in the Last Row

Every eye in the cabin followed me as I marched past the rows of business travelers and vacationers, my boots clicking rhythmically against the floor.

Seat 34E was tucked away in the middle seat against the starboard bulkhead, right next to the rear lavatory. The overhead bin above it was wide open, completely empty except for a discarded black leather briefcase resting awkwardly on its side.

The handset of the seat-back phone was dangling off its cradle, swinging slowly back and forth like a metronome, emitting a low, rhythmic electronic tone.

I stopped right beside the empty row. Nobody was sitting in 34E.

"Ryan," Captain Vance's voice crackled quietly through the lapel radio clipped to my shirt. "Do not touch the handset. Federal airport police are swarming the rear service door right now. Let the explosives and cyber-forensics detail handle it."

I didn't answer immediately. I leaned down, ignoring the radio warning, and picked up the dangling black leather briefcase resting in the overhead bin.

It wasn't locked.

With a quick snap of the metal latches, the lid popped open. Inside, resting neatly beside a tangle of black fiber-optic cables and a customized digital signal repeater, was a single, high-end corporate ID badge face-up on a velvet foam tray.

My breath caught in my throat.

The name printed on the badge read: Director of Corporate Security – Vanguard-Global Regional Operations.

And the photo staring back at me wasn't a stranger. It was the exact same senior security consultant who had personally signed off on Arthur Parker’s family boarding credentials earlier that morning at the private terminal gates.

"Mr. Parker," I spoke into my lapel mic, my voice shaking slightly. "You need to come back here. Right now."

Within ten seconds, Arthur pushed his way through the crowded galley, his face tight with controlled rage. He looked down into the open briefcase, and for the first time since he had sprinted down the jet bridge, the absolute armor of his composure cracked.

"Marcus," Arthur whispered, his voice laced with venomous disbelief. "My own head of internal security."
