Chapter 1 - The Echo of Champagne

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Harrington Hotel cast a fractured, blinding light across the marble floor, but none of it could pierce the absolute vacuum of color that had just swallowed Marcus Mercer’s face.

His champagne flute tilted slightly, a golden droplet spilling over the rim to splash against his polished Italian leather shoes. For five years, Marcus had carried the secure, untouchable swagger of a man who believed the universe operated strictly according to his ledger. He had divorced me with a ruthless flick of a judge’s pen, stripped our joint account to the bone, and left me standing in an empty kitchen with nothing but my compliance law license and a quiet, burning resolve.

Now, standing less than three feet away, his chest rose in a shallow, stuttering gasp.

"Evelyn," Marcus repeated, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked from my face down to four-year-old Emma, who was safely snuggled against my left shoulder, her tiny fingers tangling playfully in the fabric of my navy dress. Then his gaze snapped upward, locking onto Julian Rhodes, who had just stepped smoothly to my side.

Julian didn't look like a man crashing a conversation. He looked like a man who owned the room, the hotel, and very likely the entire block. His charcoal bespoke suit fit him with effortless precision, and his jawline was set with the calm, immovable authority of a billionaire venture capitalist.

Chloe Vance, still clinging to Marcus’s arm like a decorative vine, had gone completely rigid. Her carefully sculpted smile twisted into a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Julian," Chloe breathed, her voice cracking slightly. "You... you know Evelyn?"

Julian slid his arm around my waist, his touch warm, grounding, and undeniably proprietary. He didn't look down at Chloe; his dark eyes were fixed entirely on Marcus, whose knuckles had turned bone-white around his glass.

"Know her, Chloe?" Julian’s voice was smooth, carrying the low, dangerous resonance of a boardroom predator closing in on a hostile takeover. "She’s my wife. And Emma is my daughter. Did Marcus not mention that compliance and acquisitions weren't the only fields my wife excelled in?"

The silence around us grew so thick you could hear the distant string quartet playing a polite waltz.

Marcus found his voice, though it sounded scraped raw. "That's... that's impossible. When we—when we split up, she didn't have—"

"When you split up," Julian interrupted quietly, stepping just half an inch closer, "you were too busy looting a joint account to notice the woman standing right in front of you. A mistake you are about to pay for on a much larger scale."
