Chapter 9 - The Kitchen Table Conference

By 2:00 AM, the living room had been transformed into an impromptu war room. The coffee table was littered with legal documents, tax forms, and laptop screens casting a cool blue glow across the worn carpet.
Cassandra sat at one end of the table, holding a mug of black coffee, while Elena walked her through the dense legal clauses of the irrevocable trust. My father stood by the window, watching the snow continue to blanket the quiet street outside, while I sat quietly beside Cassandra, ready to sign whatever paper she deemed necessary to keep our children safe.
“I don’t want your charity, Damon,” Cassandra said quietly, not looking up from the paperwork. “Even if it’s legally structured as a trust. If we do this, if we sign these papers, it means we are tied together—not just as parents, but as business partners in a war against your entire corporate dynasty.”
“We’ve been tied together for three years, Cassandra,” I said softly, reaching out to place my hand over hers where it rested on the table. She didn't pull away; her fingers simply curled slightly against mine, acknowledging the truth in my words. “The only difference is now we’re on the same side.”
Elena slid a final, thick document across the table toward Cassandra. “All we need is your signature as co-trustee, Ms. Hayes. Once this is notarized and filed with the Colorado state registry before 5:00 AM EST, the core patents are legally untouchable.”
Cassandra picked up the heavy steel pen, her hand trembling slightly as she stared at the signature line. The weight of an entire multi-million-dollar legacy rested on the tip of that pen—a legacy built on the very ambition that had once torn us apart.
Before she could press the nib to paper, my phone—which I had left powered down on the counter—suddenly buzzed loudly against the wood, its screen flashing with an incoming call from an unrecognized, restricted number.
I ignored it. It buzzed again immediately. Then a text message popped up on the screen, visible to everyone in the room.

“Don't bother signing the trust, Damon. Richard Vance just filed a fraudulent emergency injunction in federal court claiming mental incompetence. The federal marshals are three blocks away.”
