Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Mark scrambled backward, his heel catching on the edge of the hallway rug as he tried to find his footing. “Emily, listen to me, it’s not what it looks like! This—this is just a temporary arrangement, she’s a business associate—!”

“Don't insult my intelligence, Mark,” I interrupted sharply, my tone dropping into a freezing register that stopped him dead in his tracks. “I’ve spent the last ten years paying your medical bills, draining my retirement, and selling family heirlooms to keep you alive. And all the while, you’ve been living in a waterfront townhouse funded by my overtime, playing sick to keep me on a leash.”

Vanessa pressed her back against the living room wall, trembling as she looked between us. “Mark, you told me she was completely oblivious! You said she lived to take care of you!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Mark yelled, his mask of smooth manipulation shattering entirely into raw, panicked desperation. He turned back to me, his hands outstretched in a pleading gesture. “Emily, please! We can work this out. We’ve built a life together! You love me—you’ve always taken care of me!”

“I did,” I agreed quietly, looking at him with a profound, suffocating pity. “For thirty years, I believed your lies because I thought love meant sacrifice. But you made one critical mistake, Mark.”

Mark blinked rapidly, sweat beading across his forehead. “What... what mistake?”

“You thought I was weak because I was devoted,” I said, turning my gaze toward the door. “And you didn't realize that when a devoted person finally walks away, they leave nothing behind.”
