Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Visitor at the Dorm

I returned to my dorm room just as the evening chill began to settle over the campus. As I pushed open the heavy wooden door, I froze.

Standing by my narrow twin bed was a woman I hadn't seen in over three years—my mother’s younger sister, Aunt Clara, who had been estranged from our family ever since my grandmother passed away under suspicious financial circumstances.

Clara turned around, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a heavy, complex mix of sorrow and vindication.

“Aunt Clara?” I gasped, dropping my backpack on the floor. “How did you find me here?”

“I spoke to Dean Sterling ten minutes ago,” Clara said, her voice trembling slightly as she took a step toward me. She reached out and gently cupped my cheek, her thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair. “Oh, Ava... your grandmother would have been so fiercely proud of you. For years, I tried to tell your parents that something was wrong with how her estate was handled, but they shut me out, locked me away, and called me unstable.”

“They drained everything, Clara,” I whispered, the emotional wall finally cracking just a fraction as I looked into eyes that actually cared for me. “Every cent from her trust, every scholarship I earned... they gave it all to Brandon.”

“I know,” Clara murmured, pulling a worn leather folder from beneath her arm and placing it on my desk. “And that’s why I brought you this. These are your grandmother’s original, unredacted bank logs from the nursing home months before she passed. Your father didn't just forge her signature on the educational trust—he had her sign a total power of attorney three days before her stroke.”
