Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Door Closing

Brandon stumbled sideways, catching himself against the entryway console table, knocking a ceramic bowl of keys clattering to the floor. He stared at our father in absolute shock, his hand pressed against his red, stinging cheek.

"Don't you ever use that excuse in this house again," Dad breathed, his chest heaving, his face pale and aged ten years in the span of sixty seconds. He looked around the chaotic foyer—at the scattered legal papers, the weeping mother, the disgraced son, and finally, at me, standing by the door with my suitcase and trash bags.

He swallowed hard, his voice dropping into a broken, pleading register. "Ava... please. Can't we talk about this? We can call your uncle at the firm. We can work out a settlement with the bank. You don't have to ruin your brother's entire life over this."

"My life was the only thing you were willing to ruin yesterday," I said, my hand resting on the brass knob of the front door.

Mom dropped to her knees on the rug, clutching at the hem of my jeans. "Ava, please! We raised you! We put food on your table!"

"No," I corrected her gently, stepping out of her grasp. "You put food on Brandon's table. I cleaned offices at night to pay for my own textbooks while you told me to be more like him."

I pulled the front door open, letting the cool, clean morning air rush into the stale, suffocating house. The sun was fully up now, spilling golden light across the front porch and the quiet suburban street beyond.

I hauled my heavy suitcase across the threshold, the wheels bumping down the concrete steps one by one.

Brandon appeared behind me in the doorway, his eyes dark with sudden, venomous hatred now that he realized begging wasn't going to work. "You think you're going to win, don't you?" he hissed. "You think you can just walk away and go to Ellison? Without us, you're nothing! They'll chew you alive down there, 'scholarship girl'!"

I stopped at the bottom of the driveway, turned my head slightly, and looked back at him with a quiet, unshakeable smile.

"Watch me," I said.
