Chapter 7 - The Unannounced Visitor

“Margaret! Thank God you’re here!”
The frantic cry bounced off the retro chrome napkin holders. I turned my head toward the entrance to see a tall, impeccably dressed woman in her early forties jogging across the linoleum floor, her designer heels clicking frantically against the checkerboard tiles. It was Eleanor Vance—Arthur’s younger sister and the chief operations officer of the Grandview Trust’s philanthropic division.
Eleanor stopped at our booth, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps, her hair slightly disheveled from the wind outside.
“Eleanor,” Arthur said, frowning as he stood up slightly to steady her. “What on earth are you doing out here at this hour? Did something happen at the corporate office?”
“Worse,” Eleanor panted, pulling a thick Manila folder from her leather tote bag and slamming it down onto the formica table, right next to my coffee mug. “I didn't go to the office. I intercepted a private courier packet delivered to the downtown branch twenty minutes ago. It’s about Daniel’s corporate background clearance—and the company he works for.”
I didn't touch the folder. I just looked up at her. “What kind of background clearance?”
Eleanor caught her breath, her eyes wide with a mix of shock and residual disbelief. “Sterling Enterprises—the firm where Daniel is a junior VP, the one run by Vanessa’s family—hasn’t just been leasing space from us. For the past three years, they’ve been operating a shell company subsidiary funded entirely by embezzled trust reserves from the Grandview educational fund.”
The diner seemed to go dead silent. Even the low hum of the refrigerator in the back stopped registering.
Julian’s jaw tightened. “Embezzled? From the scholarship fund Margaret set up for underprivileged culinary students?”
“Yes,” Eleanor nodded rapidly, tapping a manicured finger against the documents. “And guess whose signature was used to authorize the primary wire transfers three years ago when Daniel was promoted? It wasn't Vanessa’s father. It was Daniel’s signature—forged or coerced, but legally registered under his employee ID as compliance officer.”
Arthur slowly lowered himself back into his seat, his face turning a dark, dangerous shade of grey. “Good lord. They didn’t just use Daniel to marry into status. They set him up to take the fall if the financial audits ever caught up with them.”

I stared at the Manila folder. The coffee in my mug grew cold. The tragic reality settled over me like lead: my son hadn't just been corrupted by greed; he had been handed a loaded gun by his own in-laws and taught to point it at his own head.
