Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Touch

The harsh glint of the firelight caught the edge of the small velvet pouch hidden deep within Clare’s coat pocket. Her fingers brushed against the cold, smooth glass of the vial, the tiny stopper whispering against her skin like a death sentence. Sebastian was still catching his breath in the titanium wheelchair, his chest heaving with the exertion of having stood for those agonizing, triumphant seconds. Gabriel stood vigil beside him, his gaze sharp, assessing every micro-movement Clare made.

"You're shaking," Sebastian noted, his voice dropping as he looked up at her, mistaking the paralyzing terror in her frame for physical fatigue. "Sit down, Clare. Pour yourself a glass of scotch. You earned it tonight."

"I... I need to wash my hands first," Clare managed to say, her voice hollow, barely carrying over the crackle of the hearth.

"Take your time," Sebastian replied, a rare, genuine warmth softening his harsh features. "Gabriel, get her a glass."

Clare turned sharply, practically fleeing toward the adjoining private powder room. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind her, sealing her off from the suffocating presence of the syndicate boss and his most trusted enforcer. She locked the deadbolt with trembling fingers, leaned back against the polished marble sink, and dragged her hands down her face.

In the mirror, her reflection looked like a stranger—pale, haunted, eyes wide with panic. She pulled the velvet pouch from her pocket and placed it on the counter. The glass vial inside held less than a milliliter of clear liquid, yet it carried enough weight to destroy everything she had built, everything she was fighting to protect. If she didn't use it, the voice on the phone had promised an irreversible tragedy for Oliver. If she did use it, she was no better than the monsters who ran the streets of Chicago.

Think of your son, Ms. Bennett.

The words echoed in her ears, cold and merciless. She pulled the stopper out of the vial, the faint chemical tang stinging her nose. A drop on her thumb. Just a single drop mixed into the arnica oil. When she massaged his lumbar region tonight, the toxin would absorb directly into the bloodstream near the newly awakened nerve endings, mimicking a sudden, catastrophic neurological relapse. It would look like natural failure.

A sharp, heavy knock rattled the bathroom door.

"Clare? Everything alright in there?" Gabriel’s low, gravelly voice cut through the wood.

Her heart slammed against her ribs. "Yes! Just... feeling a bit lightheaded from the drive. I'll be right out."

She stared down at the open vial. Time was running out. She had to make a choice, and the consequences would be stained in blood either way. With a suppressed sob, she tipped the glass slightly, letting a single, microscopic droplet catch on the pad of her right thumb. She sealed the vial, shoved it back into the pouch, and stared at her finger as if it had turned to ash.
