Chapter 6 - The Red Lipstick Message

The world inside the forty-sixth-floor boardroom seemed to tilt on its axis.

The flashbulbs outside the glass doors were still popping, and Arthur Sterling was opening the manila folder filled with evidence of Richard Vance’s corporate sabotage, but none of it mattered. My chest tightened into a cold, hard knot. The phone screen in my hand felt like a live grenade.

"Julian?" Anna whispered, leaning in close as she caught the sudden, violent shift in my expression. "What is it? What's wrong?"

I didn't answer right away. I zoomed in on the photograph of the Tribeca kitchen island. The red lipstick message—*Check your front door, Julian*—was smeared aggressively across the quartz. But it was the background detail that made my blood run cold: the smart-lock status panel on the wall showed that the master security override had been engaged from the inside.

The nanny I had vetted and rushed over at 7:00 AM hadn't just lost them. She had let them out. Or worse, she had never been on our side to begin with.

"Julian, look at me," Anna demanded, her voice rising with a panic that pierced straight through the boardroom noise. "Where are my kids?"

"Keep your voice down," I muttered, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached. I looked up from the phone and locked eyes with Richard Vance across the mahogany table.

Vance was no longer smiling. But there was a cold, predatory gleam in his eyes that told me he knew precisely what the lipstick message meant.

"Something wrong with your morning stock alerts, Martin?" Vance purred, adjusting his cuffs with exaggerated calm. "Looks like you have an emergency at home. Maybe you should excuse yourself before this board meeting gets... uncomfortable."

Arthur Sterling looked between Vance and me, frowning deeply. "Julian, what is happening? If there's an active threat—"

"The threat is sitting right here wearing a custom-tailored Brioni suit," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a low, lethal register. I stepped away from the table, leaving the manila folder right in front of Arthur. "Read the files, Arthur. Every wire transfer, every shell company registration, every forged eviction notice. If I'm not back in this room in thirty minutes, hand those files directly to the federal prosecutor."

"Where are you going?" Anna grabbed my arm, her fingers digging into my sleeve. Her green eyes were wide with terror. "Julian, my children—I'm coming with you."

"No," I told her, keeping my tone iron-clad even as my own panic threatened to break through. "If Vance's people are inside my penthouse, they aren't looking for me. They're using Sophia and Samuel as leverage to force a signature on the merger surrender. If you come, you walk right into their crosshairs. Stay here, lock the doors, and let my legal team back you up."

"I am their mother!" she cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "You think I'm going to sit in a boardroom while my babies are taken?"

Before I could answer, my phone rang. A live video call request from an unrecognized secure protocol.

I hit accept and slammed the phone face-up onto the center of the mahogany boardroom table, turning the screen toward everyone in the room.

The video feed opened to a dark, high-ceilinged warehouse. Bound to a steel chair in the center of the frame was the nanny I had hired four hours ago, a gag stuffed tightly in her mouth. Standing behind her, wearing a black tactical vest and holding a burner phone, was Greg Miller.

And sitting on a wooden crate just a few feet away, crying softly while clutching a small, faded stuffed elephant, was Samuel.

Sophia wasn't in the frame.

Greg leaned down, looking directly into the camera lens with a sick, triumphant smirk.

"Nice penthouse, Mr. Martin," Greg’s voice echoed through the boardroom speakers, freezing every executive in their tracks. "Sorry about the mess on the kitchen counter. But your security is a little too leaky. Now, here are the new terms: You walk out of that building right now, drop all the federal filings against Vanguard, and sign over your controlling shares by noon. Otherwise... well, the little boy stays with me, and the girl goes on a very long, very permanent vacation."
