Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Lie

The words hung in the air of the kitchen like shattered glass, sharp and heavy enough to slice through the silence I had lived in for fourteen months.

Daddy killed Mommy.

My fingers froze on the wool of my coat. The training that had kept me alive through three decades of syndicate warfare, federal indictments, and double-crosses suddenly evaporated, leaving me standing in my own home like a man stripped of his skin. My heart hammered against my ribs, heavy and erratic, while my mind scrambled to reassemble a world that had just been upended by a four-year-old’s small, trembling voice.

"Lucia," I breathed, my voice dropping into a raspy whisper I barely recognized. I reached down, my massive hand trembling as I tried to touch her shoulder. "What did you say, sweetheart? Who told you that?"

Lucia flinched away from my hand as if I were burning her. The fragile bravery that had forced those three forbidden words past her lips vanished instantly, replaced by a wall of sheer, unadulterated terror. She buried her face in the fabric of my trousers, her tiny frame shaking with violent, silent sobs.

Across the room, the young maid stood frozen by the counter, her face drained of all color. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the edge of the marble island, and her eyes darted between Lucia and me with wild, panic-stricken urgency.

"Mr. Russo, please," the girl stammered, her voice shaking so badly she could barely form the syllables. "She didn't mean—she’s just a child, she’s confused—"

"Shut your mouth," I snarled, the command carrying the lethal weight that usually made grown men drop to their knees.

I turned my fierce gaze back to my eldest daughter. "Lucia. Look at me."

She wouldn't look up. Valentina and Mia had started crying now, their terrified wails echoing off the high ceilings of the kitchen, multiplying the chaos in my head until I couldn't breathe.

Rosa burst through the swinging pantry doors, her face twisted with alarm. She took in the scene—the crying girls, the petrified maid, and me, standing frozen with my hand still extended toward a daughter who was terrified of her own father.

"Dominic, stop it! Look at them, you're terrifying them!" Rosa shouted, rushing past me to drop to her knees and pull Lucia and her sisters into her arms.

"She just said..." I choked on the words, my throat constricting as the accusation echoed relentlessly in my skull. Daddy killed Mommy.

The Mendoza cartel had ambushed Isabella's SUV in Queens. I had spent three months systematically hunting down every last triggerman, every mid-level capos, and the regional boss who ordered the hit. I had watched the life leave their eyes with my own hands. I knew who killed Isabella. It was a blood debt paid in full.

So why would my own daughter, who had been strapped into her car seat in the back row when the bullets flew, look me in the eyes and point the finger at me?

"Get the girls upstairs, Rosa," I ordered, my voice dangerously low as I forced myself to stand upright. I looked at the young maid, who was now backing away toward the rear exit like a cornered animal. "And you. Don't even think about leaving this estate."
