Chapter 8 - The Statewide Network

I walked over to the terminal, Colonel Sterling right beside me.
On the screen, a vast web of interconnected names, financial transactions, and police report numbers sprawled across the monitor. It was a digital map of corruption spanning six counties, linking municipal judges, police chiefs, and regional politicians in a massive, systemic network of extortion and falsified accident reports.
"Look at the timestamp on the latest entry," the specialist said, pointing a finger at the screen. "Three days ago. A hit-and-run involving the state senator's nephew. The local report was scrubbed by Michael personally, and a homeless man in the next county was framed for the vehicular manslaughter."
"My God," Emma murmured, coming up behind us and staring at the glowing monitor. "Michael wasn't just a small-town bully. He was running an insurance and protection racket for half the state's elite."
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a secure ping from the Pentagon logistics desk, but the screen displayed a direct incoming call from an unlisted, encrypted satellite relay.
I pressed answer.
"General Mitchell," a cool, sharp voice commanded without preamble. "This is General Vance from the Joint Chiefs. I've been reviewing the initial data packet coming out of your mother's kitchen."
"Sir," I acknowledged, standing at attention instinctively. "We have secured primary evidence of systemic municipal and county corruption, including the suppression of a homicide investigation dating back seven years."
"I saw the files," General Vance replied, a heavy sigh crackling through the static. "And so did the Attorney General. The reason I’m calling you directly, Rebecca, is that the local fallout is expanding faster than we anticipated. The state governor’s office just contacted the Pentagon demanding your immediate detachment, claiming federal overreach."
May you like
"Overreach?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "They're covering up murders, General."
"I know that. The AG knows that," Vance said firmly. "Which is why you are not coming back to the base tonight. You are going to broaden the mandate. I am placing you in operational command of the entire multi-agency task force sweeping this region. Clean out every last rotten branch of that tree, General. Starting with the courthouse."
