Chapter 2 - The Colonel’s Interrogation

The paramedics finally burst through the double doors with a stretcher, wheeling equipment over the threshold with practiced haste.
"Clear the way!" a paramedic shouted, pushing past Daniel, who stood frozen near the witness box like a ghost.
Colonel Carter stood up slowly, wiping a smear of blood from his thumb with a gauze pad. He didn't help load me onto the stretcher. Instead, he stepped directly into Daniel’s path, blocking the husband from following the medical team toward the exit.
"Step aside," Daniel snapped, his voice trembling slightly as he tried to maintain his composure in front of the judge. "That's my wife. I'm legally responsible for her medical decisions."
"You aren't responsible for anything anymore, Mr. Whitaker," Carter said, his voice cold, flat, and carrying the icy weight of a military tribunal. "In fact, you're about to become very interesting to federal investigators."
Judge Hanley peered over his bench, banging his gavel sharply. "Colonel Carter! What is the meaning of this? This is a civil family court proceeding—"
"Your Honor," Carter interrupted, turning to face the bench while keeping a protective wall between Daniel and the exit. "With all due respect to your docket, this courtroom is now an active crime scene."
Patricia gasped, clutching her pearls. "Are you out of your mind? My son is a pillar of this community! He runs a successful logistics firm! That woman is a manipulative lunatic!"
"Your son runs a logistics firm that has been moving medical-grade immunosuppressants across state lines without a pharmaceutical license," Carter said smoothly, pulling a folded stack of official Department of Defense intelligence documents from his breast pocket and placing them on the judge’s desk. "And Mrs. Whitaker didn't collapse from stress today, Your Honor. She was being slowly, systematically poisoned."
The courtroom erupted into pandemonium.
Daniel went white as a sheet, taking an instinctive step backward toward the exit. "He's lying. He's crazy. This is a conspiracy concocted by her attorney to flip the custody case!"
"Your attorney withdrew two weeks ago, Mr. Whitaker," Judge Hanley noted coldly, his eyes scanning the first page of the dossier Carter had provided. The judge looked up, his expression grim. "Colonel Carter... explain this. Now."
Carter turned back to Daniel, his eyes narrowing like a predator locking onto its prey. "Mrs. Whitaker’s bloodwork didn't show a panic attack or simple dehydration. It showed trace levels of cyclosporine and heavy metal inhibitors—the exact compounds used in targeted organ rejection therapies. Someone has been dosing her daily coffee or medication for the last eight months."
Daniel laughed hysterically, a high-pitched, cracking sound. "Prove it! Show me the lab report!"
"I don't need a lab report, Mr. Whitaker," Carter replied, stepping forward until he was inches from Daniel’s face. "Because when I asked your wife what happened just before she passed out... do you know what she whispered to me?"
Daniel swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "What?"
