Chapter 9 - The Unraveling

Margaret pushed past her husband, her face twisted in absolute hysteria as she pointed a shaking finger at me.

"You ungrateful, malicious bitch!" Margaret screamed, lunging forward until a federal agent gently but firmly guided her back. "He raised you! He fed you! And you come back here like a plague of locusts to tear down everything we've worked for!"

"Margaret, save your breath for your federal public defender," I said coldly. "Your personal offshore accounts in Zurich were flagged three hours ago. Every luxury car, every piece of jewelry, and every square foot of this estate is now subject to asset forfeiture."

Richard Hail, who had somehow managed to arrive in his black sports car before the road was completely sealed off, sprinted up the driveway, his face purple with rage.

"Gerald, what is going on?!" Richard demanded, grabbing my father's arm. "The board just called me! Stock in Ulette Insurance is plummeting twenty points in after-hours trading because federal agents just seized the corporate server farm!"

Gerald looked between Richard, Margaret, and the federal marshals surrounding the perimeter. The absolute, unshakeable confidence that had defined his entire life finally crumbled into dust. He looked old. Small. Defeated.

"Evelyn," Gerald whispered, his voice dropping into a broken, pathetic plea. "Please. We're family. We can settle this quietly. A private arbitration, a statement to the press... just tell these men to leave."

I stood motionless, the cold night wind rustling my hair.

"Fifteen years ago, I stood on this exact porch in the freezing rain asking for a fraction of that mercy," I said quietly. "You told me I made my choice, locked the door, and erased my name from your home."

I turned my back on him, walking toward the sedan.

"Now you've made yours."
