Chapter 9 - The Ledger in the Floorboards

We ate in quiet companionship, the crackle of the fireplace providing a steady background rhythm to the howling wind picking up outside. Tom didn't pry into my past, and I didn't ask about his. For the first time since Russell's funeral, my mind felt clear.

As Tom finished his bowl and stood up to put on his coat, he paused by the edge of the braided rug near the bookcase. He nudged the corner of the rug aside with the toe of his boot.

"One more thing Russell asked me to make sure you found," Tom said, pointing down at a small, brass-ringed floorboard set flush into the wide oak planks. "He said if Julian or Victoria ever showed up waving court papers, you'd need more than just the deed to protect yourself."

I stood up from the armchair, walking over to join him. "What is that?"

"A compartment," Tom said, kneeling down and slipping his fingers through the brass ring. With a gentle tug, the heavy wooden board lifted upward, revealing a hidden hollow space beneath the floorboards.

Inside sat a second, larger metal lockbox, coated in a light layer of dust.

I knelt beside him, my heart quickening. "What's inside?"

"Proof," Tom said simply. "Proof of how Russell's original empire was actually funded, and why his children's trust is built on a foundation much shakier than they realize. Russell wanted you to have the leverage, just in case they decide to take this to trial."

I reached in, my fingers brushing the cold metal of the box. It wasn't locked with a key; it had a combination dial.

"What's the combination?" I asked, looking up at Tom.

"The day Eleanor passed," Tom said softly. "Russell kept that date close to his chest his whole life."

I thought back to the journal in my bag—the dates, the notes, the memories Russell had left behind. I spun the dial, clicking the numbers into place: 04-12-84.

With a satisfying metallic snap, the heavy lid popped open.
