Chapter 6 - The Edge of the Blade

The sterile chaos of the intensive care unit ground to a halt under the sharp command of my voice.
Daniel lunged forward, catching his mother by the shoulders just as she tried to throw herself over the side rail of the hospital bed. Barbara was sobbing hysterically, her immaculate coiffure coming undone as she fought against her son’s grip, her eyes wild with a terror she had never experienced in her sheltered, upper-crust existence.
"Let me go! Let me see him!" Barbara screamed, her fingernails clawing uselessly at Daniel’s sleeves.
"Mom, stop! You heard her, you'll contaminate the sterile field!" Daniel yelled, his own voice cracking with panic as he dragged her backward toward the doorway. "If you want him to live, you have to get out of the way right now!"
I didn't have a second to look back at them. On the monitor, Richard Reynolds' heart rhythm remained a chaotic, jagged scribble. Perfusion was dropping by the millisecond. The synthetic graft we had sewn into place hours ago was holding, but the electrical conduction system of his native heart was failing under the immense systemic stress of the secondary ischemic event.
"Charge to three hundred joules again," I ordered, my voice cutting through Barbara’s high-pitched wails like a scalpel. "Clear!"
The heavy thump of the electrical paddles sent a violent tremor through Richard’s limp frame.
For three agonizing seconds, the screen flatlined. A steady, electronic whine filled the room, sending a cold spike of dread straight to the pit of my stomach.
"Push one milligram of epinephrine," I barked, stepping in to resume manual chest compressions, keeping the rhythm steady and deep. "Come on, Richard. Don't quit on me now. You survived the tear; you don't get to check out on a arrhythmia."
Harrison hovered over the IV lines, sweat stinging his eyes. "Epi pushed, Chief. Heart is still in asystole."
"Again. Clear!"
May you like
I delivered the shock once more.
