Chapter 10 - The Knock on the Door

The line clicked dead with a sharp tone before I could ask any further questions.
I lowered my phone slowly, staring out across the sunlit backyard where Olivia was laughing as she scooped Miles up into her arms. The wind rustled through the oak leaves overhead, carrying the faint scent of rain from the western horizon.
I thought the war was over when Ethan signed the papers in that glass-walled boardroom. I thought we had secured our perimeter, patched the leaks, and taken back our ground.
But sitting there on the porch with the phone still warm in my palm, I realized Warren Caldwell wasn't just a corrupt corporate lawyer protecting a local real estate scam. He was a small player in something much bigger, something that stretched far beyond county lines and state tax audits.
And by tearing down his front line this morning, I had just kicked a hornet's nest that the federal government had been trying to locate for a decade.
From the front of the house, a sharp, metallic knock echoed through the quiet afternoon air.
Not the gentle tap of a neighbor dropping off mail.
A heavy, authoritative, three-part rap on the new steel front door.
I stood up instantly, setting my coffee mug down on the porch railing. My hand drifted automatically to my hip where my service sidearm usually rested—though I was out of uniform, wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
"Maya?" Olivia called out from the lawn, her smile fading as she noticed my sudden tension. "Who's at the door?"
"Stay inside with Miles," I commanded softly, my voice dropping into an absolute tactical register.
I walked swiftly through the living room, approaching the entryway. Through the frosted glass panel of the front door, I could make out the dark, unmistakable silhouettes of three men standing on my porch. Two of them wore heavy dark suits; the third wore a military dress uniform with the brass insignia of a federal marshal.

The heavy knock sounded again, shaking the doorframe.
I reached out, grabbed the handle of the smart lock, and pulled the door wide open.
