Chapter 17 - Whispers in the Alpine Dark

The interior of the Adler’s Nest was a masterclass in modern minimalist luxury—polished walnut floors, roaring stone fireplaces, and priceless modern art adorning the reinforced concrete walls. But beneath the veneer of wealth hung the cold, unmistakable atmosphere of a high-stakes clandestine meeting.
Avery led the team down a sweeping spiral staircase carved directly into the natural rock of the mountain interior, their boots making no sound on the thick Persian rugs that lined the corridors.
“Thermal sensors indicate three active heat signatures in the master study on the lower level,” Brock whispered, tapping away at a small handheld frequency scanner he had wired into the estate’s local Wi-Fi router. “Marcus is in there, along with two individuals speaking fluent Russian and English. They’re hooked into a secure satellite terminal.”
“Guards?” Reed asked, peering around the corner of the hallway toward the heavy oak double doors at the end of the corridor.
“Two private contractors stationed outside the study,” Brock replied, checking his tablet. “Armed with suppressed submachine guns. Standard tactical patrol rotation every four minutes.”
“We have a thirty-second window between their sweeps,” Avery said, his eyes narrowing as he calculated the timing. “Reed, take the left flank when they pass the service alcove. Brock and I will take the right. Silent takedowns only. We can’t afford an alarm before we secure those drives.”
They melted into the shadows of the hallway. Seconds later, two heavily armed guards in unmarked black tactical gear rounded the corner, their boots clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. They moved with professional discipline, their weapons held at a low ready.
As they passed the service alcove, Reed moved with blinding speed. He stepped out from behind the pillar, his forearm wrapping violently around the lead guard’s throat while his other hand drove the butt of his combat knife down toward the man’s tactical vest, silencing him instantly.
Simultaneously, Avery dropped out of the shadows behind the second guard, placing a swift, precise chokehold that rendered the man unconscious before he could draw breath.
“Clear,” Avery whispered, lowering the second guard gently to the plush carpet. “Drag them into the alcove.”
They piled the unconscious guards out of sight, stripping their comms earpieces to monitor enemy chatter. Avery stepped up to the heavy oak double doors of the master study. Through the polished brass keyhole, a sliver of warm light cut across the floorboards.
Inside, Marcus Vance’s voice drifted clearly through the heavy wood.
“...the decentralized nodes are already live in three continents, General,” Marcus was saying, his tone smooth, confident, and utterly devoid of remorse. “Once the remaining encryption keys are uploaded from this drive, the Pentagon won’t just be compromised—they’ll be locked out of their own command structure permanently.”
Avery gripped the brass handle of the door, exchanging a sharp, knowing glance with Reed and Brock.
“On three,” Avery mouthed silently.

One... Two... Three.
With a sudden, violent kick, Avery smashed his boot against the lock-plate. The heavy oak doors burst open, slamming hard against the interior walls with a deafening crash that shattered the quiet of the alpine retreat.
