Chapter 9 - Fractured Allegiances

Back in the forty-second-floor penthouse, the storm outside had intensified, throwing jagged sheets of lightning across the empty white walls. Natalie stood motionless, staring at Julian Vance, refusing to let the tremor in her chest show on her face.

"You're bluffing, Julian," Natalie said, her voice steady, though every instinctual alarm bell in her mind was screaming. "The London syndicate was dissolved by the international trade commission back in 2008. There is no legal mechanism for a foreign entity to seize domestic Texas commercial assets without a federal grand jury ruling."

Julian let out a low, dry chuckle, reaching into his trench coat to pull out a thick, leather-bound folder bearing the unmistakable red wax seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. He tossed it onto the concrete floor between them.

"Grand juries are remarkably compliant when presented with ironclad evidence of interstate money laundering, Natalie," Julian said smoothly, stepping over the folder as if it were trash. "And thanks to your late husband's creative bookkeeping—funneling capital through shell companies that conveniently shared routing numbers with our European accounts—you’ve given us federal jurisdiction on a silver platter."

Arthur Vance stepped between them, his face flushed with righteous indignation. "This is an illegal hostile maneuver! I have the original 1994 trust documents right here—"

"The 1994 trust documents were superseded by an addendum signed in Geneva three days after your grandfather’s stroke in 2011," Julian interrupted, his eyes flashing with sudden, cold menace. He turned his gaze back to Natalie. "You wanted to play the grand architect, cousin. You wanted to strip Grant of his titles, his status, and his dignity. But you forgot the cardinal rule of high-finance blood sports: never clear a board until you know who owns the table."

Natalie’s jaw tightened. She looked down at the dossier on the floor, then back up at Julian. Despite the paralyzing shock of the revelation, her strategic mind was already racing, calculating variables, searching for the hidden vulnerability in his immaculate presentation. Julian had the documents, he had the Swiss backing, and he had the element of surprise.

But he didn't have the physical access keys to the primary server room located in the sub-basement of the Whitmore Tower—keys that only she and Arthur possessed.

"You can freeze the holding accounts, Julian," Natalie said quietly, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corner of her lips. "You can even lock me out of this penthouse. But without the master cryptographic key to the local server grid, those European assets are nothing more than digital ghosts. You won't be able to withdraw a single cent from Texas soil."

Julian’s smug expression flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a razor-sharp edge of suspicion. He took a slow step toward her. "Where is the key, Natalie?"

Before Natalie could answer, the heavy steel security door at the private elevator landing burst open with a deafening crash.
