Chapter 5 - The Midnight Laboratory Report

I pulled the phone out, stepping away toward the French doors that opened out onto the moonlit terrace.

The caller ID flashed a secure Baltimore exchange.

I hit accept and pressed the phone to my ear.

"Vance," I said tersely.

"Vincent," the toxicologist's voice came through the speaker, breathless and trembling with an agitation I had never heard from him before. "I ran the chromatography on the sample you sent. It took three separate test cycles because I couldn't believe the initial readings."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Give it to me."

"It's not a heavy metal," Vance said rapidly. "It's an organic alkaloid derivative combined with a synthetic neuro-inhibitor. It targets the optic chiasm directly, shutting down nerve transmission from the retina to the visual cortex while leaving zero trace in standard hospital blood panels after forty-eight hours."

"Is it reversible?" I demanded, my voice cracking slightly.

"If she stops ingesting it immediately, yes," Vance said grimly. "Within a few weeks, the inflammation will recede, and her sight will return to normal. But Vincent... whoever is administering this isn't just trying to blind her temporarily. The dosage in this sample is calculated to cause permanent, total necrosis of the optic nerve within exactly fourteen days."

Fourteen days.

Today was day twelve.

I stared through the glass of the French doors. Inside the dining room, Elena was smiling warmly as she wiped Lila's mouth with a linen napkin.

"Vincent?" Vance's voice echoed from the phone. "Are you still there? Who gave this to her?"

I didn't answer. I hung up the phone, sliding it back into my pocket as a cold, absolute rage took possession of my soul.

I turned back toward the dining room, my hand sliding under my jacket to grip the cold steel of my pistol, ready to end this nightmare tonight—until the interior lights of the mansion suddenly flickered, hissed, and died completely.

The house plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

And from the shadows behind me, a familiar, terrifying voice whispered right into my ear:

"Looking for me, Vincent?"
