Chapter 10 - The Horizon of a New War

Back at the house, the sun was beginning to dip below the tree line, painting the autumn sky in deep shades of violet and amber.
Major Vance set the encrypted tactical terminal on the living room coffee table while my mother brewed a fresh pot of coffee in the kitchen. The screen of the laptop glowed brightly in the darkening room, displaying a complex, sprawling web of shell corporations, offshore bank accounts, and political donations tied directly to state-level senators and federal contractors.
Wade Cain was just a local symptom of a much larger, national disease.
"Colonel," Vance said, tapping a blinking icon on the interface. "This isn't just about local real estate fraud or the embezzlement of combat rations. Look at the routing codes on these offshore wires. The syndicate Cain was working with extends all the way into the Pentagon’s logistics procurement office in Washington."
I walked over, leaning against the back of the sofa as I studied the glowing data streams. The arrest of Wade Cain and his son was only the opening skirmish. The real architects—the senior officials who had signed off on the logistics cover-up and orchestrated the silencing of my father—were still sitting behind mahogany desks in the capital.
My phone vibrated against the table. A secure message flashed across the screen from the Department of Defense Inspector General’s office: Preliminary audit confirmed. Full congressional and military tribunal briefing scheduled for Monday morning in Washington.
I looked up, meeting Major Vance’s steady, unwavering gaze.

"Looks like our leave is officially canceled, Major," I said quietly, a cold, resolute smile forming on my lips.
"It was bound to be, Colonel," Vance replied, reaching for his service cap. "When do we fly out?"
