Chapter 5 - The Bloodline of Arthur Vance

The name Arthur Vance sat on the aged paper like a physical blow.

Arthur Vance. The billionaire industrialist whose mysterious disappearance in the late nineties had spawned decades of true-crime podcasts, financial scandals, and congressional inquiries. The man whose entire corporate empire had vanished overnight, leaving behind a trail of unsecured debt and a missing infant daughter whose whereabouts had never been discovered.

I dropped the paper as if it were burning my skin. The carriage house seemed to shrink around me, the dusty air turning thick and unbreathable. My mother—the woman who had raised me with a cold, critical eye, who had always favored Vanessa’s soft compliance over my fierce independence—wasn't my mother at all. And Eric wasn't just a con artist who happened to pick me out of a crowd.

He was an operative. Or a hunter.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, shattering the silence of the studio. I pulled it out, expecting Detective Miller or another federal agent.

Instead, it was a text message from an unsaved number.

Just one image.

It was a live security feed from inside my mother’s downtown penthouse condo.

In the center of the frame, sitting calmly in my mother’s velvet armchair, was an elderly woman holding a silver-handled cane. Her silver hair was coiffed to perfection, her eyes sharp and predatory. Standing behind her chair was a tall man in a dark tactical turtleneck—and on the coffee table in front of them sat an open, blood-stained leather case identical to the one Elena had been carrying.

My mother—the woman I had called Mom for thirty-seven years—was kneeling on the Persian rug at their feet, her hands bound behind her back, her face bruised and bleeding.

A second text pinged immediately after the photo.

“Tell us where you hid the Vance ledger, Claire, or we send your mother’s fingers one by one.”

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the screen, the panic I had successfully locked away all night finally threatening to burst through the dam. They weren't just after money. They weren't just dismantling a fake marriage. They were hunting the missing heir to an empire built on blood and stolen gold—and they knew I had just opened the door to the past.

My phone rang instantly—a direct voice call from the unknown number displaying the live feed.

My thumb hovered over the green accept button. The screen flashed with the caller ID: Unknown.

If I answered, I stepped straight into the lion's den, walking into a trap set by people who played for keeps and left no bodies behind. If I hung up and called the police, my mother would likely be dead before the first cruiser turned down her street.

The wind howled through the loose eaves of the carriage house, rattling the old windows as the distant wail of a police siren echoed faintly in the valley below. I looked down at the open safe, then back at the glowing screen of my phone as it vibrated relentlessly against my palm.

I took a slow, deep breath, my hands steadying as the cold clarity returned to my veins. I pressed accept, brought the phone to my ear, and heard a cold, unfamiliar voice whisper across the line:

"Time's up, little heiress. Do we have a conversation, or do we start cutting?"
