Chapter 3 - The Siege at the Gates

The heavy iron gates of the Harrington estate loomed through the fog, locked tight against the outside world. But tonight, the high walls and manicured boxwood hedges couldn't keep reality out. Flashing red and blue lights painted the stone pillars in an erratic, pulsing rhythm, reflecting off the black hulls of three federal vehicles parked squarely across the driveway.
Inside the rear cabin of an unmarked tactical van, the monitors flickered with live feeds of the estate perimeter.
"All units, containment is secure," a crisp voice crackled through the comms headset. "No vehicles in or out. The asset is isolated."
I sat in the swivel chair, adjusting the collar of my dark civilian jacket over the high-neck undershirt that covered my scars. Admiral Reed sat across from me, studying a digital schematic of the main manor house.
"Your father’s legal team is already mobilizing," the Admiral noted, tapping a finger against the tablet screen. "Senator Vance’s office just placed three separate calls to the district attorney trying to block the asset seizure warrants. They know if those bank records become public record, half of Capitol Hill goes down with them."
"Let them try," I said, my eyes fixed on the live camera feed showing the front entrance of the mansion. "Vance has been eating off my father’s plate for a decade. Once we trigger the primary data dump, Vance’s campaign contributions will look like pocket change compared to what he took in defense kickbacks."
"Are you ready for what comes next, Evelyn?" the Admiral asked, his tone softening from military commander to something resembling a concerned mentor. "Once we cross that threshold and execute the search warrants on the home office, there’s no turning back. Your mother and sister will be caught in the fallout, whether they knew the full extent of the fraud or not."
I looked at the monitor, watching Celeste pacing frantically behind the grand glass foyer doors inside the house, her phone glued to her ear. For a brief second, a pang of old childhood memory flickered—the days before the greed consumed them, when we used to sit on the back lawn watching the navy jets streak across the sky. But that family died five years ago, the night they packed me into an institution’s car and signed away my identity without a single tear.
"They made their choice a long time ago, Thomas," I said quietly. "They chose the money. They chose the lies. It's time they live with the truth."
"Move out," the Admiral ordered into his comms unit.
The side doors of the tactical van slid open with a sharp mechanical thud. Cool night air rushed in, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant ocean salt. I hopped down onto the gravel driveway, my boots crunching rhythmically as I led a team of four federal investigators toward the grand front entrance of the mansion.
The heavy oak doors swung open before we even reached the top marble step.
Richard stood in the doorway, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. Behind him stood two private security contractors, their hands hovering nervously near their tactical holsters, unsure whether to draw weapons on federal agents accompanied by a decorated Navy Captain.
"You've gone insane," Richard hissed, stepping out onto the porch, pointing a shaking finger directly at my chest. "You think you can destroy everything I built over a petty family grudge? I made you! I fed you, I clothed you, and this is how you repay me—by bringing federal thugs to my front door?"
I stopped three feet away from him, close enough to smell the scotch on his breath and see the frantic twitch in his left eye.
"You didn't make me, Richard," I said, my voice cutting through the wail of the police sirens in the background. "You tried to break me. And you failed."
I raised my right hand, flashing the digital override badge issued by naval intelligence.
"Federal search warrant, Mr. Harrington. Step aside, or you'll be joining your accounts in federal custody tonight."
Richard’s face went rigid. For a fraction of a second, he looked like he might lunge at me. But then a sudden, sharp sound cut through the night air—a sound that made even the federal agents freeze in their tracks.

It was the distinctive click of a high-caliber sniper rifle bolt racking from the upper-story balcony above our heads.
