Chapter 5 - The Encryption Key

The phone screen flashed with an incoming encrypted call, casting a harsh blue glow across my face as I stood frozen on the downtown pavement. Arthur Vance’s professional composure fractured instantly, his eyes darting from my face to Gregory’s pale, sweat-beaded forehead.

“What is that?” Gregory hissed, taking a sharp step forward, his hand twitching as if he wanted to snatch the phone right out of my palm. “Who is calling you?”

I didn't answer him. I swiped the screen, accepting the call, and pressed the phone slowly to my ear.

“Mrs. Miller?” a deep, synthesized voice crackled through the speaker, carrying the distinct cadence of a secure corporate server routing protocol. “We have decrypted the second partition of the hard drive you submitted to our compliance department this morning. The financial routing numbers match the offshore accounts linked to Gregory Miller’s secondary LLC.”

Gregory let out a sharp, breathless gasp. The absolute control he had projected moments earlier shattered completely. He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist with a desperate, crushing grip.

“Hang up,” Gregory choked out, his voice cracking with genuine panic. “Hang up the phone right now, Chloe! You have no idea what you’re messing with!”

“Let go of me,” I snarled, wrenching my arm back with a surge of adrenaline that caught him completely off guard. I backed away, keeping the phone to my ear. “Go on. Tell me what else is on that hard drive.”

“In addition to the hospital embezzlement transfers,” the synthesized voice continued smoothly over the speaker, loud enough for Arthur and the young woman to hear, “we found an active data-sharing pipeline. The files include proprietary patient pharmaceutical trials stolen from your pediatric ward, sold to a private medical tech firm owned by Arthur Vance’s primary corporate client.”

Arthur stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck. He turned his head toward Gregory, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief. “You used my firm’s corporate shell to launder stolen hospital data? Are you out of your mind?”

“It’s a lie! She fabricated the whole thing!” Gregory screamed, his voice pitching high with desperation as pedestrians turned to stare at the escalating scene. He looked back at me, his eyes wide and pleading, the mask of the cold, calculated mastermind completely dissolved into a desperate, cornered animal. “Chloe, please. We can talk about this. We can fix this. Just tell them it’s a mistake. We have a family!”

“We had a family,” I corrected him, my voice colder than ice, looking down at the man who had tried to systematically destroy my life, strip away my child, and leave me destitute. “Now, you have an federal investigation.”

Before Gregory could lunge for me again, the heavy glass doors of the luxury high-rise swung open once more. But this time, it wasn't another lawyer or an accomplice. Two uniformed city police officers strode out onto the pavement, flanked by a federal marshal holding a white legal folder bearing a high-priority seal.

“Gregory Miller?” the marshal called out, his hand resting casually near his belt as he stepped directly into our circle.

Gregory froze, trembling violently as the cold reality of his trap crashing down around him finally set in.

The marshal pulled out a badge and flashed it. “You’re coming with us for questioning regarding corporate fraud, data theft, and interstate wire embezzlement.”

As the officers moved in, grabbing Gregory by both arms and slapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists, he turned his head back toward me one last time. His eyes weren't filled with anger anymore; they were wide with pure, unadulterated terror.

Just as the police forced him into the back of the cruiser, my phone buzzed again with a text message from an unknown number. I glanced down at the screen, expecting it to be a notification about the federal asset freeze. Instead, it was a short video clip, playing in real-time.

It showed my mother’s living room.

Toby was sitting happily on the rug, building a tower of blocks. But standing right behind him, partially hidden in the dim shadows of the hallway mirror reflection, was a pair of slender hands gently stroking the back of the sofa—and the unmistakable flash of my sapphire necklace dangling against a familiar black dress.
