Chapter 2 - The Illusion of Power

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery like wind blowing across dry grass. Reporters in the back rows scrambled for their notepads, their pens scratching furiously against paper. Even Russell Crane looked down at his own legal briefs in utter disbelief, realizing too late that his high-priced client had kept a catastrophic secret from his own defense team.

“An interesting oversight for a man claiming his wife is entirely dependent on his charity,” Judge Calder remarked, removing his reading glasses and laying them deliberately across the desk. He looked directly at Adrian, his gaze hard and unforgiving. “Mr. Crane, your entire petition for primary custody and asset division rests on the legal fiction that Mr. Hollis holds exclusive financial dominion over this family. Yet, the foundational entity that owns every single bus, depot, and subsidiary of Hollis Transit Systems is legally registered under Mrs. Lane’s maiden name—with a notarized non-dilution clause that prevents transfer without her explicit consent.”

Adrian slammed both hands onto the defense table, his composure finally snapping under the intense pressure of the courtroom lights. “That was a domestic arrangement! She signed an operational agreement years ago giving me executive control! She doesn't know the first thing about running a multi-million-dollar corporation!”

“Then it’s a good thing,” I spoke up calmly, rising from my chair for the first time, “that I haven't come here to ask for your job, Adrian. I’ve come to ask for my company back.”

The courtroom erupted into loud gasps and murmurs. Judge Calder banged his gavel twice, the sharp cracks echoing like gunshots until the room fell back into a tense, breathless silence.

“Mrs. Lane,” the judge said, his tone softening with a strange, respectful curiosity. “You have submitted the primary incorporation papers. Do you have the corresponding asset freezes and operational injunctions ready for filing?”

“Yes, Your Honor,” I replied, reaching into my leather bag and pulling out a second, thicker manila folder. I walked it over to the clerk’s desk, placing it down with a deliberate, echoing thud. “Filed this morning with the state corporate compliance division. As of 8:00 AM today, all executive spending accounts, secondary corporate lines of credit, and discretionary bonuses associated with Hollis Transit Systems are legally frozen pending a forensic audit.”

Adrian turned ghastly pale. He lunged toward his lead attorney, whispering fiercely, “Do something! Object to something!”

Russell Crane looked completely paralyzed, holding up a hand to quiet his client while frantically scanning the new documents handed over by the court clerk. “Your Honor, we require a recess,” Russell stammered, his professional polish completely stripped away. “We need time to review these unprecedented—and frankly spurious—filings.”

“Denied,” Judge Calder said instantly, a faint, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. “You wanted a public accounting of the marriage and the assets, Mr. Crane. It appears you are finally getting one. But before we proceed to financial disclosures, let’s talk about the children.”
